"A luxury car that laughs at tree-huggers"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I had to replace the shocks and tie-rods.

The previous owner was a 93 yr. old man who had bought the car new. The automatic trunk motor is burned out, and I still have to fix that.

The air conditioner takes a while to get going, also.

General comments?

This is, without question, a very nice car.

My sister has a top of the line, new infinity, and I will take the pepsi challenge with her any day of the week.

This car is built for comfort, not for speed (I have the 4.1 liter engine).

I love this car and hope it will last forever. It only gets cooler. It is more comfortable than your living room couch.

I bought my baby blue 84 Coupe De ville this past winter and I love it. I drive 70 miles total to work and back and it does hurt my pocked a little - considering the fact that I used to drive an Acura Integra, but I don't mind. Everyone gets out of my way. This car has more room than some SUV's that I've test driven and it drives much smoother. I love it.

I too, have a "1984 Coupe De Ville" with a 4100 engine{56,000 miles}. I think it's the best handling vehicle I've ever had! The only problem is the water pump. I have replaced two myself, along with two by Cadillac, that makes for five total in 56000 miles! OK, I'm done venting. There are seals (4) that need to be ordered from Cadillac, along with (2) gaskets if you are a do-it-yourselfer. Get your parts before starting this full day's project, and don't forget the bottle of Stop Leak. (I'm not kidding)!

I bought a two tone blue on blue D'Elegance Coupe with an immaculate interior '84 back in 2000 for $700. Since then I've replace the engine with a gm 307cu.in. from a 1988 Sedan Deville (the 4100 had on 5 of the 8cyl. working by then). I am pleased with the results and I do prefer carburetor to fuel injection, I'm used to the 425 engine that comes in the 1977-79. If you were to do an engine swap I would suggest the 350 for a good amount of HP boost (I must admit I do like a bit of speed and power). The tranny is next, I'm trying to bring it back to showroom condition...

Hello.

I bought a 1984 Cadillac Sedan Deville about 3 years ago from a friend for $500. The car had been sitting in his yard for about 1 year not be driven and basically rusting away. Since then, I had the car painted, and I redid the whole interior. The only problems I have had is, I replaced the waterpump and the brakes, but that is normal on a 20 year old car! All the power windows still work, ac works OK for the most part. The gas is kind of sluggish, but I only drive 35 mph wherever I go:) I have had no problems with the 4100 or the transmission and the car rides so smooth. If you change the oil and keep up on the tune ups, the car will last a long time. They don't make them like this anymore for sure!

Whats up, I have an 84' coupe deville. its the most comfortable car I ever had, I have never had any problems with the motor. the only thing's I have ever changed were the battery and oxygen sensor. it also gets pretty good mileage for its size and weight 4000 pounds. 16/city 22/highway.

I am really surprised to hear so many good reviews on the 1984 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. Unfortunately, mine was a different story long toward the end. I bought the car used in 1988 with 30,000 miles on it. I loved it, it was big, roomy, comfortable, smooth and quiet. The HT4100 wasn't a powerhouse, but it got the car up to speed pretty good. I took the family to Florida to see Mickey in it in 1989, which was a 1,400 mile round trip. The car got us there and back with no problems. In 1991, the thermostat failed and the car overheated in bumper to bumper traffic one afternoon. Thermostats are considered routine maintenance, so no big deal. When hurricane Andrew was headed for Louisiana in 1992, we loaded up the Caddy and drove 800 miles North to stay with relatives. Again, car purred like a kitten there and back with no problems. I also made frequent road trips to Lafayette, Louisiana from New Orleans which was a 250 mile round trip. I never encountered a problem on any of the trips. In 1993, I moved the family to Orlando, Florida from New Orleans. I drove the moving truck while the wife and kids rode in the Cadillac. 650 miles was covered without incident. I believe the car had somewhere in the neighborhood of about 120,000 miles by this time and was 9 years old. It continued to run reliably for the remainder of the year, but by 1994...it was beginning to get old really fast. First, the computer failed and Massey Cadillac charged us a bloody fortune for a new one! I was hesitant to have the car repaired, but I believed that it would give us at least another several years of trouble-free service. Next was the digital climate control. Massey wanted an arm and a leg to repair, so we had it rigged by a shade-tree mechanic. The car was 10 years old, so we figured what the heck. The operation of the climate controls required the use of a 'toggle' switch, but worked nonetheless. One night while we were cruising home from Wal-Mart at about 45-50 mph, the transmission dropped it's gears. If you can imagine, this caused quite a jolt. At first we thought someone had rear-ended us! Thankfully, the car would still move, but wouldn't shift out of first. We 'limped' the rest of the way home in 1st gear. New transmission cost us $1500 for a re-manufactured unit. AAMCO replaced it. They explained to us that it looked as though an engine bushing had been lodged through it. I'm an idiot when it comes to automatic transmissions, so I accepted this. The car never really drove the same with the 'new' transmission. It had no get-up-and-go anymore. It almost felt as though the car was starting off in 2nd gear. I decided to bring it back to AAMCO, and on my way there the darn thing broke down on me!

The engine stalled as I was coasting down the road. I pulled it off to the side and tried to crank it. The engine would crank, but wouldn't turn over. Rats! AAA came out and towed it to the local repair shop. Turned out to be the darn timing chain! The car had 136,000 miles. I decided I'd get the car fixed this one last time and then either sell it or trade it in for a better car. I wound up driving the Cadillac for another year or so. Everything held up mechanically, but it wasn't long before the interior started falling apart. The headliner was hanging down, the windows were falling off their tracks, the plastic wood panelings were coming unglued and falling off, the fuel gage (located in the top-center of the dash) had a mind of it's own and of course the cassette player began eating tapes until it finally quit. The final straw was in 1995 when the engine started burning a significant amount of oil out of the tail-pipe. I told my wife we're taking the car down and we're unloading it! I promised her a newer car, so she agreed for us to let 'blue boy' go. We lost the driver's side hub cap on our way to the dealership. We arrived at the dealership and worked out a good deal on a 1993 Coupe DeVille (white with white/burgundy leather interior) Although they didn't give us much for the 84, I was glad to see it go! The 93 had only 25,000 miles. I drove that car until 2002 and sold it with 180,000 miles. In my humble opinion, the 93 aged much more gracefully than the 84...and I didn't half as much trouble with it. The only 'major' item I replaced on the 93 was a starter at 150,000 miles. Everything else worked like a charm. The 4.9 V8 could run circles around the 4.1 Well, that's my story!

I love my 1984 Coupe Deville. I bought the car when I was 16. I was a very typical redneck boy, and to me the car was like General Lee to the Dukes of Hazzard. My friends and I even named the car Traveler; after General Lee’s horse. The car was very large and could haul all of my friends around very nicely. When I went off to college I had to sell the car due to the age of the car and I bought a more reliable car. I kept dreaming about my old Coupe Deville though. I would like to mention at this time that I never modified the car; I never put in hydraulics or any of that kind of stuff. When I sold my car it had 215,000 miles on it. In all of those miles the only thing I had to replace was the transmission. I have been out of college for two years now. This past summer I happened to find my car sitting in the back of a field. Apparently the man who had bought my car had passed away and his son pushed the car to the back of this field as its permanent resting place. I found the son and convinced him to sell me the car. I towed the car 150 miles home. The car has a far amount of through rust, and needs a lot of TLC; yet it is still has all of the factory parts on it. At the moment I am in the process of restoring my old car. It was blind/dumb luck that I found this car again; some might even call it fate. I was surfing the net looking for some parts to my car when I came across this web sight. I loved reading the stories that were posted here, and felt that I should include mine.

To the writer of the 3/22/2005 comment who said "The 4.9 V8 could run circles around the 4.1": No surprise there! Anything could run circles around the 4.1.

Since I was 10 years old I have also dreamed of having one of the early 80's Cadillacs, specifically the Deville or Fleetwood. There was one sitting in an older couples driveway for some time, 6 years to be exact. One day there was no licence plate so I went up to the door to as about it. I asked if it was for sale and it was. I knew I had to have it, this was my dream car and my first car. The couple had passed away and it had a new Northstar engine. He offered me to take it for $500, I could not believe it, the front was garaged all its life. It is not in bad condition. I will be driving it when it gets "tuned up". It is right now completely dead, but I cannot wait to drive it. It is very comfortable inside. I have not even owned it for two weeks and people are already asking me to sell it to them. I am only 17 and own my dream car.
