Nothing mechanical apart from the brake pads has had to be replaced or repaired.
Door locks aren't the best, 2 have had to be replaced, but they were the original 18yo locks.
My Telstar was a standard 2.0 Ghia sedan when I purchased it, since then I have put a turbo from a Mazda 626 hatchback on it. It is one of the few carburetter turbos around. I also had the head shaved and K&N filters put on and this thing is a freak!! It's so quick. But the standard Telstars are great cars, comfortable, powerful, many options, one of the best cars built in the 80's.
No I don't think it would be a freak. Even the Turbo models had a laughable 87 kW.
From Greg New Zealand I bought my self a 1984 Ford Telstar TX5 hatchback for $350.00 six months ago no rust and it runs like a rocket. When I went to look at it the car was running on three cylinders and the people who were selling it must have thought it had thrown a piston. I took a gamble and found it had a dud spark plug. I paid $3.00 for a new spark plug and it went great the only thing I have done to it is I have replaced the cam belt as the old one was on its last legs it regularly does long trips and it dosen't miss a beat.
I believe this car is fast. Putting turbo on it puts you up to 87Kw, but gives a lot more torque. And also if the head has been shaved it gives you few more Kw. K&N Filters are the best in the world. They can manage more air then any other brand. Which means more air, more power, more Kw. So if this this telstar had around 100Kw it is pretty good for the car that weights just above 1000kg.
Do you know if there is any difference between AR and AS cylinder head?
This is not a really good idea shaving the head when you are putting the turbo on your car. This is because turbo engines goes better when there is less compression and NA engines goes better when there is high compression. So I wonder how good does it go and at how many PSI do you run it?
I own a 1986 telstar tx5 turbo. I bought it 2years ago it had 240,000k's on the clock which is now up to 302,000k's.It hasn't missed a beat and I have only had to do the things you would have to do eg.brakes, timing belt etc. I have done a few mods like exhaust & bov and it goes like a rocket. The only down side is it hard to fit a intercooler in behind the front bar. I will be rebuilding the engine shortly with the fitment of the intercooler and hope to get 150kw or more. So in finding I have no regrets in buying my telstar turbo.

I have just bought a 1884 Telstar 2.0litre, all standard however I have found that they have a lot of pickup when they want to I was just wondering what sort of tweaking these engines can have done to them without spending thousands of dollars.
I own a 1986 GL Telstar, it goes pretty well e.g. no mods done to it and it kept up with a 2L skyline. I was wondering if any one has any information etc on how I can get my hands on either a turbo or a turbo engine for my baby.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for me to ask this question, but here goes.
I have just bought an '87 Telstar 2.0i, It has (premium fuel only) written on the petrol flap,
Does anyone know what the consequences of feeding it 91 octane are? (apart from slightly less performance)
Thanks.

I have owned my 84 telstar gear for about 18 months now and I have had my Ls now for 2 months I have 17 inc cromies on it, a K and N filter the only thing I've had to do is put in it is a new starter motor, the car has a little over 20000 kms and still runs like a gem!
