Had a problem with the sensor on the dashboard which keeps flashing Anti-lock braking system failure and brake pad failure - all had been checked, but the sensor wasn't repaired as I was going to sell it soon anyway. (and it would have cost a fair few quid)
I had this car for about a year and I thouroughly enjoyed it.
On the motorway it was effortless you just glide along the road.
But when you want that power you put your foot to the floor and that humongous front end rises, the arse dips down and you're away.
There is a bit of turbo lag, but that's to be expected - it's an old car.
I now own a nissan 200sx '99 and that is just as quick (maybe even quicker).
I was reluctant to sell it, but it had covered 145,000 miles so it had to go.
Great all round car for daily use.
What did you do to fix the flashing of the anti-brake light on the dashboard. My car keeps doing the same thing, but I want to know how much it will cost to fix. This is my first car, I just turned 18 and really appreciated if you responded to my question. Thank you.
Very likely the ABS failure can be traced to the large relay in the "boot" just near the fuel filler. Don't be afraid to open the relay and re-solder the connections. I had to that twice in the eleven years I've owned my XJ40.
Also, many electrical problems on the XJ40 can be traced to relays and solder connections. Like the bulb warning lights (broken solder connections in the relay boxes at each corner) and a buzzing radio (broken solder connection the power amplifier). Other Hella relays can be replaced with cheap Bosch relays. The electrics are actually very reliable aside from these solder joint failures -- the low current switching system works well and is easily traceable. I wish I could say the same for the rubber bits... :-)
