2001 Volkswagen Polo GTi from UK and Ireland - Comments

"High spec, sporty and fun"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rear de-mister elements faulty - window replaced under warranty.

General comments?

I like just about every aspect of this car.

Nice and quick. Pulls from 20mph in 4th and still has all you need at 80+ on the motorway. 70 is reached at 3200rpm with power climbing to a peak at 6500rpm.

Very comfortable. Sports seats mean that you can drive for hours without any aches or pains. Electronic A/C, CD changer and PAS just add to the pleasure.

Excellent handling although the stiffened suspension trade-off means that bumps in the road are a lot more noticeable.

Rare, distinctive and very high spec including Xenon headlights and internal sensor alarm system.

Like all VW's overated, the polo gti's performance is not that outstanding, as for beating 90% of cars off at the traffic lights that can be said of a lot of vehicles.

Your car does 0-60 in 10.3 seconds and reaches a true 123 mph unless assisted by wind or gradient. Source: Autocar road test in 2000.

Why do so many young kids believe their car's speedometer?

In fact, I think you'll find that for a 3-door, the Automobile Association, or 'AA' have quoted a 0-60 time of 8.70 seconds, and a top speed of 127mph. 10.3 seconds? Even a 2001 Ford Fiesta 1.6 16v will do 0-60 in 10.80 seconds! That's truly pathetic.

You people. if you trust 0 - 60 times websites or magazines provide you'll never get the best motor!

Go by bhp per ton and if sources for example top gear say a peugeot 106 gti does 0-60 in 9.7 seconds don't believe it.

Look at the parkers price guide and take a look at the 106 1.6 xs. its 0-60 time is stated as 11.8 seconds which is diabolical - but why 11.8 seconds when it as the 90bhp saxo vtr engine (1997). now consider its power to weight ratio. 1000/895 x 90 = 100.55 bhp per ton. this is better than a lupo 1.4 16v sports which does 0-60 in 9.7seconds!

Most 0-60 times stated are correct, but not all of them. don't fall into the 0 - 60 trap!

Also keep in mind that, at least for magazines, they try and achieve the fastest 0 - 60.

That means they will rev the engine to the redline and drop the clutch or do something similar - things that the majority of car buyers will never do especially with any regularity (say bye bye engine and clutch).

Regarding the above comments, the 3 door polo weighs under 1000kgs and 8.4 seconds is a very believable 0-60 time. I thought the point of this website was to give people a chance to let others know their experience with a car for prospective buyers. Why do so many know it alls feel the need to correct people when they don't like a car. Fact is you may not like the Polo, it may be a car you see fit for teenagers, but that's the 0-60 time, 127 is the top speed (and for the person who felt the need to use parkers to try and disclaim the figures, 8.7 and 127 are the figures quoted by them).

Listen to all you prawners going on about 0-60 if you try it for yourself then you get an accurate time it aint rocket science!!!

Good little cars for the money better quality than a 106gti and vts.
