1992 Chevrolet Blazer S10 from North America - Comments

"I paid for a S10 Blazer and got a boat. Just a hole with a shell around it to throw money into"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

EGR valve gets stopped up 2 times a year and cost around $300 to clear the carbon.

Very hard to start and smokes when started for the first 10 seconds. Valve seals went bad.

Had to have complete fuel injection replaced. Runs great for 2 days then runs terrible for 2 days. The solution, drive it 2 days then take 2 days off work.

General comments?

The 4 wheel drive has surprised me when 4 lo got me out of deep sand. Got stuck in 4 hi. Pulled a lot of people out of ditches during a major ice storm and never spun a wheel. I think my mechanic owns it because he has it more than I do. I've spent over $2,000 on repairs in the past 2 years and nothing has changed. I've been to several garages and the same thing.

Save yourself some money and buy a V8 ford. The extra fuel is cheaper than the repairs.

I own a 1991 blazer and it smokes for some unknown reason. The compression is good, the valve seals are new, and I am not losing any coolant (head gaskets). If anyone has an idea email me at rec032555@alltel.net.

Change the coolant temperature sensor and the wire connections to the Computer (not to the gauge) this will stop the computer reading it at -40 degrees F and will stop it from running rich. this has stopped my smoking problem and boosted hp and gas mileage.

I own a Chevrolet Blazer ’92, since Nov. 04 started to fail, run well and then for any unknown reason fail and stop. I already change the gas pump, the EGR valve, the spark plugs wires, and the injector, and still failing, the computer does not show anything bad. If someone has any idea what it is wrong I’ll appreciate your help, you can contact me at luis2875@yahoo.com.mx.

The CPI HO 4.3 engines have their problems, but there are only a few things that can go wrong. The EGR problem exists because people don't clean the intake manifold before putting the EGR valve back on. When you take the EGR valve off, spray carb cleaner down in the holes behind the EGR real good. When you go to start the vehicle again, it may hesitate due to the carb cleaner, but keep cranking on it, it WILL start. Also, the temp sensors and O2 sensors can go bad without the computer reading it. This would cause a hard start and the engine would smoke due to it running rich. If the blazer has over 100,000 miles on it and these have never been changed, I suggest changing them. Also, the distributor can go bad in these as well. Take the cap off the distributor and pull up on the rotor. If it pulls the shaft of the distributor up a 1/4 inch or more, it needs to be replaced. This can cause a vehicle to run good and die for no reason. Chances are if this is bad, the timing chain may be stretched pretty good as well. Usually these go hand in hand as far as going bad. I would replace just the distributor however and see how that goes. The last problem is the CPI fuel injection unit. The fuel regulator blatter bursts on these causing the vehicle to run rough and not have the power it normally does. The problem is that you cannot replace just the fuel pressure regulator due to the fact that it is part of the CPI unit itself and the whole thing needs to be replaced. MSRP on these is around $400 but if you search ebay you can find them for half that. These are problems to be aware of as far as The CPI units on Blazers, Jimmys, and Bravadas from 92-95. I hope this helps.

I've owned a few trucks and I'd have to say my 92 s10 Blazer has converted me over to being a Chevy Truck Fan... With 134,000 miles so far, (hard driven, as she is a farm truck) I can see easily making 200,000. If you want a new truck that is not going to have any maintenance work to do on it, then buy a new truck. Don't gripe about a decade old vehicle...
