Head gaskets started leaking at 130,000.
Alternator and starter went out within a week after that.
250,000+ miles and will still run 13.6 quarters... STOCK!
My first car and I still have it. The engine is finally getting tired and the rear main is starting to go. The GS is still a total blast to drive and I will drive it anywhere. I only wish anybody could build a car half as reliable as this Stage 1.
I agree completely. I have a 4 speed model. I have done various performance mods resulting in 541 hp at the wheels, 12.00's at the track, and I still get 13 mpg on the highway.
It is one of 4 Buicks that I currently own, and I love it.
I used to own a 1970 Stage 1 and they are awesome performers; feared on the streets by those who knew of them. Those who didn't soon learned the hard way. This had to be the greatest muscle car ever, and I often wonder why GM never put more into advertising them. I'm currently looking for another to replace the one I sold so many years ago.
My 1970 skylark, competed with and won a street race with a 68 vette. I shut that showy little piece down cold, and shut its owners comments up regarding my so called "family car"
Never irritate a female who is proud of her first car.
I owned a green 1970 Skylark, the first car I ever bought on my own.
I kept getting comments from this girl, about my age, about her vette and its speed, and she pushed my buttons one too many times.
On a back street here (I live in a small rural farming community) I not only beat that 68 vette, I shut it down cold.
Never insult a woman and her first car she's bought on her own.
I also own a 1970 GS-455 Stage 1. But I have 12000 original miles. I can get rubber at 40MPH if I floor it. 515lb-ft Torque, now that's stump pulling power. I never plan to sell my car, NOT IN A MILLION YEARS. Don't care for the 12MPG and Premium. Oh well, good to know that I can smoke anyone in town though.
Bought my "baby", my 1970 Buick Gs 455 Stage 1 in July of 1976. Used, but owned by Jack Ellena of Ellena Buick Olds in Lawrence.
That was absolutely the best car I ever owned.
Took a wrong turn in Denver one afternoon in a neighborhood under development; was pushing her (as usual) & eating a nice fluffy apple turnover. Now mine had the stock muncie 4spd with the big stick hurst shifter & 4;11 rear gears, when I noticed there was a ditch (main city water pipes going in) separating one part. It was too late to stop so (being a fresh 22) I decided I had no choice so I floored my baby & sure enough she jumped a good 3 1/2 ft gap (elevated on the landing side) in the street, bent the frame on landing. A Goodyear shop with a straightener had me back on the road in less than 72 hours.
Upon landing the apple turnover kinda exploded, and the interior of the car looked like one of those things you shake & it makes it look like its snowing inside.
I really miss my baby, & also would love to find another one with that 455 4barrol in it. I read an article that said this was the absolute hands down most powerful production car ever built in the United States. After that model, cars came with the dreaded catalytic converter & the muscle car days for all intents & purposes were over.
