1985 Suzuki Mighty Boy from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"Requires driver with a VERY warped view on life.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Blown head gasket.

Exhaust fell off.

Someone tried to steal my alloy wheels off it, breaking 6 wheel studs in the process.

Clutch cable seized and broke.

Blown oil seals.

Drinks more oil than petrol.

The door sills & seat frames crack if the suspension is upgraded to be too stiff, or if the occupants are too heavy.

Noisy valve-train.

General comments?

This car is almost 20 years old now, so don't be surprised about what has broken on it.

To add insult to injury, it's been "hotted up".

If lowered & fitted with good shock absorbers, it makes it feel like you're driving a go-kart.

The back end feels hard & jittery unless you have a big bag of potting mix in there to weigh it down. Drives well then.

These came with 550cc engine. Fit the 800 motor & gearbox out of the later Suzuki 800 Hatch and it makes them go so much better.

Japan had a turbo twin-cam engine & 5 speed gearbox in their MightyBoy.

They only cost about $6000 new, so build quality is pretty dodgy at best.

No options of air conditioning, power anything or any kind of creature comforts, save for the single speaker AM radio...

They are fun to drive, and there's something about them that makes you want to pull up beside a V8 Commodore/Falcon/whatever, look at them, blip the throttle & laugh your head off...

Chances are they'll laugh too...

Hello fellow, Mighty Boy owner.

I also own a Mighty Boy, and most of the things that have gone wrong with yours, have happened to my little beast as well.

And yet, despite all these problems... we both have kept our Mighty Boys. (says something doesn't it)

OK, my point really, is that I laugh at all the attention I get, just from driving round a roundabout, or parking.!

The Suzuki Mighty Boy truly is the greatest ride, thank you for telling me about your's and good Luck for the future.

Regards.

1985 White Suzuki Mighty Boy owner.

I don’t care if the mighty boy is unreliable. Chicks love guys that drive little beasts. Lol. Blew up my Corolla the other day, my plans are to get a Mighty Boy next and blow that engine too. I will upgrade the engine with a turbo engine of some kind. With the power to weight ratio and the fuel efficiently of the light weight beast what more could you want. Cheers mighty boy lovers. and yes I am an idiot.

I just bought a Mighty Boy for $350 running, off an old man up Sunshine Coast way. I wanted one for its uniqueness and scarcity, and cuz it's darn cool and funky, plus I'm hopin when I do it up, chicks will dig it and think it's cute heh heh.

Hi everyone.

In regards to having a Mighty Boy as your first car, DO IT. I did. The only problem was when I was hit in the rear and the car was written off, I HAD to get another one.

My grandfather always said that "if you can drive that piece of crap, you'll be able to drive anything." It's true.

The lack of acceleration and the need for constant gear changing is a great way to learn to drive a manual car, let alone the fact that parking is a breeze. Also the fact that it's only got two seats means that you don't have to worry about turning down mate's requests for a lift every where.

There are Mighty Boy fanatics all over the place! We are usually happy to help future owners any way we can and often meet and go cruising, so the social aspect is great.

For more information I suggest going to 'The Australian Mighty Boy Owners Network' web site - www.tamon.org. Have a look at the gallery and see what these beasts can turn into and browse through the 'For Sale'section and you're bound to find something.

Hope to see you on the next cruise!

Hoooooooray for all the other Mighty Boy owners out there, they are on a come back!! Pity the insurance companies don't appreciate their real value!

I got mine 13 years ago, its going to be 30 next year. Did a few mods and it's a ripper. GREAT first car as well a great "fun" car. If you do blowup the 550 engine (generally the timing belt goes), seriously consider the 800cc it was originally designed for, but never manufactured as. I put in a 3cyl Japanese Swift engine (993cc). Slightly too big, but what fun! Would do a Japanese import 550 turbo or an Audi 650 engine next time.

For those thinking it looks dangerous, check out a junk yard. EVERY smashed one I saw had one thing in common, the cabin was ALWAYS in tack! The back squishes, the front squishes, but being so light, they just sorta bounce away!

Have fun people.

PS: Also had mine made into a convertible! Talk about a great summer beach car. Just stuff the board out the top, hehehe.

I currently own a 550cc mighty boy turbo, it is my first car. sadly ever since I bought it off a fella who rebuilt the whole engine and put a 5speed manual in it had ongoing problems with my drive cables, purely becuase the dick just cut mistubishi magna calbes and cut them, but I've had 2 sets made up and I'm going on my 3rd. but never the less I still love my lil beast, the power to weight ratio is awesome. don't see many turbo mightyboys around these days so I think I've got myself a rare beast.
