The suspension system appears to have deteriorated quite early. Tyres off-balanced and sent for balancing numerous times, but problem persisted. Car was superb when new, effortlessly reaching 190kph with no fuss. Now, vibration from unbalanced wheels makes it uncomfortable to go beyond 140kph. Would be interested to know if others driving this model experienced the same.
The car pulls off from standstill very strongly, also while in any gear at any speed for that matter.
Gives good adrenaline flow if you're an excitable driver, but not so comfortable if you're chauffer driven around.
Gearbox is responsive while engine sweet sounding and never strained, makes for very relaxed and confident driving. Would appreciate views from others?...
Proton perdana V6 is the best car that I ever buy. It's very comfortable, quiet moving and luxurious-look car despite the price is not so high.
I have owned the Perdana V6 for the past 2 years already and I must say that so far, I have not experienced any major problems with it, unfortunately I must highlight that most of what is said about its performance (by certain motoring reviews and advertisements) are exaggerated. I for one was quite disappointed when I got the car as its performance, especially its "pick-up" from stand-still was rather disappointing. Totally contrary to all the hype about its performance in the ads. On top of that there were certain minor defects that needed rectification, something that is not common in Japanese and European makes, but I must admit that it still gives the best value for money.
I've owned the Perdana V6 for about 5 months. So far so good. I compared the Perdana V6 with the Nissan Cefiro Excimo and without a doubt, I made the right choice in purchasing the Perdana. Now the new Camry is out - the 2.4L one. Test drove it and now am wishing to dispose the Perdana which is nothing compared to the Camry.
Guys n Gals, go for the Perdana V6. All you need to do is look after as it is your wife/husband and it won't go wrong on you. Also, try to have the absorbers/suspension system changed completely to a better one and go for 17" wheels and ensure you fit in Michelin tires. Then go... go... go...
If you have no money to buy a car, please don't waste your limited resources on the Perdana V6... please!!! I own one (not that I don't have money to buy a Camry or a Cefiro or a BMW, but I just wanted to feel whether what they say about the V6 is true... that's it's a superb car). Well, the moment I drove the car out of the showroom, I sighed. I had wished that I had made a left turn into Nissan and purchaased my dream car... cefiro Brougham VIP. That's the ultimate machine with latest technology. Not that that V6 crap with technology as old as 7 years.
If you want more power, convert your lame V6 engine to Eterna V6 twin turbo...it's worth it!!
I must say, the PERDANA V6 can consider to be the most "smooth-est" car Proton ever produce so far. I have no idea if the suspension were that good compare to the GTI or WAJA which well tuned. Some claims this is an old car, but the idea of a good quality car produce from time to time are either its NEW which has fancy-latest-features insert into it or produce from an old car which new fancy-latest-features insert into it. So either way, it's a new car right? Anyway from my own judgment, the PERDANA V6 has a god engine, but lack of performance and most of all, I had a limited fun playing with it. Let just say it's a car for those who wanted to travel for long distance business and leisure. If you want a car to have fun on, why not find a BMW M3? AUDI S4? Mitsubishi Evolutions? My advise, reconsider again if you want to own this car.
Common problems with this Perdana V6 is disc brakes, quality of the car (come small parts are missing), Over Drives (a feature like sport) which the dealer itself have no idea what is it. Sometimes the AUTO CRUISE is not functioning.
Why this car is so popular? Well, let just say Proton is the most affordable car in Malaysia and the consumers have limited choice to choose from.
1. I recently replaced my V6's standard absorbers with Monroe's "Sensatrac" units. Although the ride stiffened up a bit, the enhanced handling (or road holding as some put it) is worth it (doesn't mean its on par with the likes of BMW, Mercedes or even Audi, though).
2. Have been driving V6 for more than 2 years now (>80,000km) and sensed that the response has deteriorated somewhat by now. I used to enjoy the rush of power when overtaking by releasing the overdrive (OD), but nowadays the power does not come on as immediate anymore (it may be however attributed to familiarity that one has come to expect of the power rush that the sensation is now lost...).
3. Other comments: The seats are now rattling. The seats padding are also not that supportive (I drive also a BMW3, and they are worlds apart).
4. The only thing going for the V6 are its engine and to a lesser extent reasonably ratio-ed and programmed fuzzy logic transmission.
5. Just wonder when Proton is going to introduce the replacement model??? Anybody any idea?
I have 2 points to make
1) EON should employ airbags in its Perdanas (if not all models) as standard. In Australia, even the basic model Daihatsu Coure here (equivalent to the Kancils in Malaysia) have driver+passenger side airbags. Mind you the luxury cars such as the Mercedes have 8-10 airbags as standard now.
2) Over here, the Holden Commodores usually takes about 2-3 years before a face lifts and another 2 years before a whole model re-design. EON should take heed and follow the trends to be competitive nationally and internationally.
Dear friends, I own a Proton Perdana 1996 sei. I've been using the car for along time. I assume I know the car in & out. Problem after problem. Man it's an unworthy car. If you're to buy a proton, the smaller ones are better compare to the bigger ones. My problem was with the transmission, rims, door rubbers, light doors, stability compare to a gti or waja. I spent thousands of ringgit everytime on the car. It was a regret owning the car. Yes at the beginning everything was good untill a year later, where the transmission fail. It jerks when you drive at a constant speed on the road. Terrible jerk which disallowes you to speed. That part cost me RM 1500 to be replaced. 2 years later the same part failed. I did not change it, because I know it's no use. Believe me guys, those guys at eon doesn't know about their own proton in & out till today. I got rid of that car last year and went for a BMW X5 (4.4i). It's awesome guys. Superb dashboard, handling, stability, traction, braking, functions, seating comfort, acceleration etc. There's a sporty sound from the interior when you rev you X5. Go sit in one and you'll know why it's the best suv in the world. Now my money is worth for years. That's the difference between a Proton Perdana / V6 & BMW X5.
Bmw X5, road tax cost much higher than the perdana - RM 4500 (1 year) vs RM 394 (1 year)
Price: RM 570,000 vs Rm 97,000.
Power: 300hp vs 137 hp.
Top speed: 250kph (electronically controled) vs 220kph (max flooring)
Airbags: 10 vs 0.
Speakers: 10 vs 4.
Transmission: streptonic vs fuzzy logig.
Brakes: ABS, EBD, HDC, CBC, TC etc vs ABS & FUZZY LOGIC.
Steering: Multi Function Steering (all buttons) vs plain Steering (no buttons)
Engine: V8, 32 VALVE vs V4/V6, 16/24 Valve.
Comments: To be close to european cars, proton must built good quality cars (inside & outside), longer, bigger, powerful, comfortable, safe.
Waja looks great to me, but slack.
1. Need to redesign the interior dashbaord, arm rest, seats small, 2 sunshades in front (include lights), steering tilted to low.
2. Outside, need a larger body, wider body, longer body and all round skirting with bigger rims.
3. Engine, powerful one, maintanence free if possible. Longitudinal direction rather than current trend.
Hope to see some good product from proton.
How can we do it?
Simple, get help from luxury car makers.
If I had RM570,000 and was forced to buy cars for
that money and again forced to choose between
Perdana and BMW X5, I will get 5 Perdana V6's
and give 4 away to my relatives/friends and
still have some cash back.
I owned a Perdana V6 3 months ago, it is going smooth and I consider it as a worth with a 100k+ value. I love the engine so much, and I would make some modification to it to cover those small little problems. By the way, I need some advise on what spring and absorber would be good for this perdana. I guess the automative engineer should be able to help. Thanks!
I agree with the automotive engineer comment... for those who have tons of money.. why did you guys buy PERDANA in the first place... that means you yourself either jerk or do not the meaning of money..it's worthwile spending time thinking on how to imrpove it rather than jerking on weaknesses.. please stop giving hundread of thousands suggestion.. cause.. if you need to spend another RM 100 k on car.. might as well go for a merc or BMs...
BTW, I am seeking best advice from automotive angineers on best suspension and spring (standard) to be used on Perdana 2.0 sei to improve its stability and comfortability.
Hi out there,
My V6 seem to emmit a screeching sound when ever I take it above 160kph. I comes from the right side of the engine. Funny thig is that its not there when the road are wet.
Can someone help.
Anak.
Johor bahru.
Well I have been with my PV6 for 2 1/2 years now, and the mileage has clocked 99k. The car is so far so good and nothing should be complained about with such a price. With such a price you can't expect more. After all, if you need a superb car that you don't have anything to complain about, then opt for a beemer or merc!bare in mind, money does matter!
