"Not worth buying at any price"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

After six months, my "original" Grand Cherokee was replaced by Daimler-Chrysler Canada due to "incorrect paint process" with a new one.

The "replacement" vehicle has been a nightmare. Where do I start?

At 5200 km a wheel alignment was required due to severe tire feather edging.

At 12000 km the front axle bushings were replaced.

At 13700 km the front brake rotors were replaced due to pulsation.

At 18800 km the electrical recall 882 was performed.

At 23500 km all 4 light alloy wheels were replaced due to corrosion.

At 27800 km the front brake rotors were replaced for the 2nd time; the sway bar bushings were replaced; the transmission valve body was repaired due to harsh shifting; the leather on the steering wheel was coming off and required a new wheel; a water leak at the driver' side floor was repaired.

At 30200 km the engine started to "ping" under load and no solution was given by the dealer.

At 37200 km the front differential bearings and the front drive shaft were replaced; the valve body was overhauled for the second time; the engine pinging is still without solution.

At 41900 km the transfer case output seal was replaced.

At 46400 km the front rotors were replaced for the 3rd time (I was charged for the labor) ; the transfer case was resealed; the front differential pinion bearings were replaced; the engine is still pinging (I was told by the dealer to use premium fuel).

At 50000 km heavy engine pinging was considered "normal" by Chrysler engineering department.

At 51300 km the driver's recliner motor was replaced.

At 54200 km the intake manifold shield recall B06 was installed.

Now that my odometer shows 54500 km I have to bring the vehicle to the dealer to have the brake pulsation repaired for the 4th time; the alloy wheels are all corroded; the transfer case is noisy; the front end vibrates and is noisy; a water leak on the passenger side has developed.

An appointment with the Chrysler rep has been requested.

General comments?

The Chrysler reps at head office in Windsor, Ontario are very annoying. They lack vehicle knowledge and people skills.

Serious quality issues with this vehicle such as the brakes, transfer case, transmission and front end.

Everyone talks about rotor problems on the 2000 GC. Mine has 28000 witn no brake problems. I live at 9000 ft. elevation and drop 4000 ft. in 19 miles on a steep winding road into town. If you drive like most people I drive with, you can smell their brakes and you will have all kinds of rotor problems. Get them hot and any brand will warp. My neighbor's wife can fry hers in 6 weeks on a Bonneville. Look at your driving habits!

I had my rotors replaced on my 2000 at 27,500 KM.

I'm at 60,000 KM now and they are starting again.

However, I pamper the brakes to avoid a trip to the service department.

According to my dealership, the 2001 Grand Cherokee brake problem is well documented and they have outstanding service bulletins to replace brakes from specified suppliers. They replaced my brakes without question, and the mechanic was very experienced in making the same change to other vehicles.

This car sukcs. It's a...

I've had:

1. Computer problems

2. Sensor problems

3. Radio problems

4. Back Hatch problems

5. Constant wheel alignment problems

6. Oil gage problems (The oil gauge won't stick in easily - like my Nissan)

7. Tire steering pump problems

8. Passenger side water filling in - this is the most annoying - because every night I have to remove at a minimum 1/2 gallon of water from the passenger side.

9. Chrysler/Jeep folks are no help. They're unfriendly. They don't want to hear your problems. They switched me to so many 800 numbers whan I called that I just became frustrated and I quit calling.

10. The local Jeep dealer doesn't think it's his problem. They think I'm looking for a free fix. I have never, never had a problem with my 3 Nissans before. I currently have 190000 miles on 1992 King Cab.

11. It's a gas guzzler.

12. The tires are quickly worn out.

--------------------------------------------

After writing all this I am going to write to my state attorney general - hopefully he'll listen. I live in Florida.

--------------------------------------------

PS - If anybody read this, and feel they've had enough problems - can we form a coalition and ask Chrysler/Jeep to do something about this?

Raymond Sassine.

I'm with you my friend. I used to own a 2000 Grand Cherokee with a multitude of problems starting with Brakes, sensor problems, rotors, and electrical problems my neighbors had to call my house everyday late in the evening to tell me the lights were flickering on/off even when my lights were in the off position. It looked like my car was possessed. I hope you could get a class action lawsuit against this problem. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Has anyone else had problems with the transfer case seal on the 2000 Grand Cherokee? Mine was replaced fourteen months ago, and now they are trying to tell me it needs to be replaced again. Does this seem right?

I have had so many issues with my 2000 Jeep's breaks that I could scream. 3 rotor replacements, multiple pads, calipers, etc. After one repair job the dealership in Seattle screwed up and poorly reassembled the brake system which caused it to seize up on the freeway. I love the car, but Daimler-Chrysler should truly admit that their brake Engineers were a bunch of morons.

Transfer case seals replaced at 65K and now leaking at 80K.

Rotors replaced at 5K miles

Rotors replaced again at 17K miles

Rotors replaced again at 30K miles

Rotors replaced again at 50K miles

You would think that they would fix the rotors, right?

Wrong! Now I just drive with warped rotors and pulsations... all the way to the Honda dealer :)

This car is the most unreliable car ever. I will never buy a Jeep product again.

30K the fuel pump needed to be replaced.

Never did anything other than replace the brake pads, but definitely felt pulsing.

After 50K this car just started rotting.

The driver side door lock always would lock and I would have to reach in from the rear passenger door to open. (remoteless entry more like pain in the ____ entry)

50K my transfer case was leaking and blew $2500 to replace with parts and labor

the heater went out another $150 low labor b/c I have a good mechanic.

Then I started the lower end of my engine went with 1.5 years of payments left.

My mechanic analyzed and his recommendation "sell it asap"

every other dealer with trade in "sell it immediately"

what did I do?

Sold it immediately and went and bought the "toyota piece of mind"

couldnm't be happier.

What was done to fix the water leak on the driver's side? I had my 2002 GC for almost 2 years before this started. Now in heavy rains or car washes it leaks and only on the driver's side.

Did you ever find out why the lights would come on and off when the car was off and the light switch was in the off position? I have seen this on mine, too.

The drivers side leak is in fact the AirCon drain, the condensor under the dash takes water out of the air and condenses it to water (the patch on the car park, garage after a long trip). The drain extends just a short way out into the engine bay and is mounted in foam to stop it rattling or leaking. So, its leaking back into the foot well - basically poor design. I suggest either attaching a "L" bend, a longer piece of pipe to extend it or lots of RTV sealant (remember it gets hot in there so this will smell a bit) between it and the body of the Jeep. Found today, fixing with all three of these this evening when the car cools down... ;-)

My jeep grand 2000 was great until 2008 when I had an "unintentional acceleration" incident that really scared me. I find out I am not the first. Although most of the folks I spoke with know that this is a problem they deny it happens. I would be very content to say this was driver error, but I have small feet and cannot touch the gas and brake at same time. I have gotten no where with the head office in Canada.
