This car has been crap since I picked it up from the dealer in the fall of 2000. The service at Honda has been a struggle as well. At first the hood didn't line up with the fenders and the driver rear door was hanging off the body. They adjusted the door and hood (the first dealer said the hood couldn't be adjusted). The hood sort of lines up now, but it rattles intermittantly. Wind noise is terrible in this car. My mother also bought a 2000 Civic and she has the same wind noise. Strange that no reviews point this out. They've replaced window gaskets and it's no better. The window regulator needed replacement because it made a crunching noise. The technicians didn't line up the window crank properly when they re-installed it so it points in the wrong direction when the window's up. The speedo fluttered and stuck when the car was brand new. It took Honda months to bring one into stock, so by the time they replaced it, it was 16,000 km out. Now the car is de-valued because the odometer went back to zero. Whatever you do don't have them ever change a speedo, even if it doesn't work. The idle is intermittantly rough. I needed a two way valve and sensor replaced in the fuel system when the light came on in the dash. The dealer says this is from overfilling. I come from an auto service background, and I don't overfill my vehicle. When I picked up the car, another guy was there on his 3rd set! Hmmm... Now the car has 60Km on it and the rear main seal and oil pan gasket are blown and the thing leaks oil. The front brakes are down to 30% and all I do is highway driving. I get on the highway in the morning and hit the brakes maybe 3 times before I get off. I believe the brakes wear just by friction against the rotors as you drive this car. I don't drive this car hard. The Honda dealers don't want to honour the "nation wide" warranty, it's always a battle for them to fix stuff under warranty when it's not from the dealer I bought it from.
Terrrible assembly quality from the Alliston Ontario plant
Bad parts quality.
Was this car bought used? It sounds like it had been in a wreck. I have a 97 Civic HX, my friend has a 99 EX, and my other has a 2000 EX and we haven't experienced those problems. We all drive our cars pretty hard too.
Also the only wind noise I hear is through my window (the area around the window is bent due to a break-in).
I'd be interested to know if my friends and I got lucky, or if you're just unlucky. From what I can tell, most people are pretty happy with their Civics.
I own a 2000 honda Civic DX Hatchback. A couple of quick comments... I bought it as a sort of compromise:
Toyota or Honda were'nt making station wagons in the late 90's / 2000 when I went looking, especially given the price range. A friend owns a 96 Civic Hatch that was always fun and peppy to drive and hadn't given her anything to complain about, and regularily got 40 MPG. I chose an automatic and it was stickered to get 33 to 38 MPG's.
Mine struggles to get 25!!! I've gone to Honda with questions and complaints only to basically be told "too bad, those are just estimates"... and now this: tailight seals have been leaking loads of water in the rain, a problem that now honda wasnts 200$ to fix!!! A two year old car just 10K past warranty. I hadn't even known it was a problem, last spring, water in the wheel well about 4 inches deep (I had never needed to get in there), now, this fall, noticing wet things and musty smell, I took it to the dealer to be told it's a cost I'll be forced to pay.
If you are going to get your tail-light replaced, buy yourself some of those cool altezza one's for yours, then you can go show your friend how optimistic you are.:>
I have a 2002 Honda Civic with 14,000 miles. The Rotors are going out. The steering wheel shakes when I apply the brakes. Everyone I have talked to said Honda will not replace rotors under the standard 36K warranty because the part is a "wear and tear" item. I bought a honda because I did not want to deal with repairs. My 1994 Chevy Truck has given me less issues.
I own a 2000 Honda Civic sedan, which has about 45000 miles, and bought it brand new. I never have any problems with it besides wind noise at high speed, one recall, and some rattle noise from the rear wheels. A tank of gas gives me about 25 ~ 30 mpg. Stock stereo system is good compare to a 1992 ~ 1996 Toyota Camry. Civic is also a good vehicle to work with whether it's basic maintains or a project vehicle. I've owned it for almost 5 years. All it needs are regular oil changes, maintains and tire changes.
I have recently inherited a 1997 Honda Civic from a family member. Although I cannot say that this vehicle is in any way a piece of junk I do have some similar complaints. The car produces a lot of wind noise at highway speeds from around the windows and door frames. My Civic has been in the family since new and has never been in an accident. The car has been garage kept and I started driving it when it had about 50,000 miles. I have had to replace the timing belt already (thankfully there was no valve damage) at 63,000 miles. I have found it dreadfully slow for the mileage I get which has never been over 30 miles per gallon.
The car I replaced was a 2000 Dodge Stratus that I bought new and drove to 100,000 miles before passing it on to my daughter. The Stratus was much more road worthy when it comes to handling, highway cruising and basic comfort. I regularly got almost 30 miles per gallon on the highway and it had plenty of power from a 2.7L V-6. The Civic although not a bad ride does not hold up to the perception of a solid little car. I will most likely replace this car in another year or so and perceived quality will not be my only factor in determining my next vehicle. I have to say that I would have never expected the Stratus to be a more pleasurable vehicle to own... I bought it based on price.
I know I may be in the minority on this point, but with the quality gap narrowing between the makes it will take a little more to get me into a new Honda. I will have to drive the latest ones to see if they perform any better.
I purchased a Civic SE brand new in 2000. I have 110,000km on this car and have never had a bit of trouble. The only things that I have purchased were new tires at 70,000km and brakes at 75,000km. This has been one of the best cars that I have ever bought in my 39 years of driving. I am 6ft4 and find it to be very comfortable. I look forward to my next purchase in a few years when I will buy another.
