"Better, cheaper and far more fun version of a vauxhall vectra"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Didn't start once over 3 years - but that was due to me leaving the car in gear and turning the key - no warning buzzers, just a "click". Put the automatic back into park and started straight away!

Front suspension made creaking noises after 15,000 miles - dealer fixed this just within warranty by replacing joints, but only because I told them where to look - they 'couldn't' find the fault before then (another website highlighted this issue with this model)

Suffers from sticky brakes when left in the rain overnight - back brakes can stick on and have to drive forwards to release (my cavalier used to do that too?)

Seats are uncomfortable over long distance (over 100 miles) and the drivers lumbar support is completely in the wrong place (I'm 5'11")

Dealership need watching when servicing - they like to add in "freebies" (eg small can of oil) - things you don't need and are not free at all when you check the bill.

General comments?

Very reliable car - so far!

Mileage is not brilliant - but being an automatic and large engine size, I expected that. Switch on the air conditioning and ensure the next petrol station isn't over 300 miles away!

Road holding is superb. When buying I compared this to a vectra - where the vectra's back-end slid, the primera's stayed stuck to the road. Now I see why it won all those touring car rallys!

Very practical - everything goes in the boot, lots of scratches on the plastic - but nothing breaks (it regularly gets filled with b+q visits)

I would like to get some feed back on your suspension problems. I have a 1998 si which squeaks nonstop at the front, I've tried replacing both suspension arms a few times, but problem keeps recurring after a short period of time.

We have a 1999 si with creaky suspension on the front nearside, which comes and goes depending on the road surface and whether there is a front nearside passenger. The car drives brilliantly and holds the road superbly regardless. It also passes the MOT despite whatever it is that is "wrong" with the suspension.

We have decided just to live with it as the car had 85000 miles on it when we bought it. These cars are such value for money that I have recently bought another one owner P11 Primera with full service history from a Nissan main dealer for £350.00 on eBay, and passed the creaking version onto my son. He merely turns up his cd player if it is performing. My next car will also be a Primera, and hopefully also the one after that. I didn't go a bundle on the latest Primera and we may have to go for a Tino (another great Nissan model) after we eventually sample the ultimate, a 51 plate Primera. Having bought various cars of many different manufacturers over many years, including bad experiences with brand new cars, we have decided that the only cars worth buying within our budget (we earn well over £45,000 per annum between us and have a small mortgage) are Nissans for less than £1000.00. Call us boring if you like, but unless you have unlimited funds anything else will cost you more money than you can reasonably afford.
