Well I had to put a new carb on it, but nothing other than that.
This is what a Jeep is supposed to be. Rough and crude on the highway, but can't be beat off road and in the snow. The torquey 304 puts out PLENTY of power. It is a little uncomfortable on long trips. But who cares!!
Anyway I have never gotten stuck in the woods in the mud or in the snow. It does get a little tippy though. Also the 4 speed is a little hard to jam through the gears.
I had exactly the same problems with my 77 cj5. The guy I got it from had gotten fed up with the jeep constantly stalling. I got it for a reasonable price and replaced the carb. Other than the four speed being hard to jam, the jeep runs perfect now.
I have a 1979 CJ5 it has the 6 cyl 258 with the T18 trans Would like to go to a 8cyl that would bolt on to my t18 transmission what other modifiction would have to do? what options do I have?
I have a '78 cj5. When I first bought the Jeep, it was unreliable and got less than 10 miles per gallon. And just as you guys have said, I had the carb rebuilt and it hasn't missed a beat since and am now getting 16 miles per gallon. I'll never get rid of my cj5.
