1991 Citroen AX GT 500 from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Quick, stylish and fun"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Central locking broken when I bought the car on drivers side, but I found the fault (snapped wire in car-> door wire feeder) and this is fine now.

Ongoing overheating problem. Have replaced the head gasket myself, and checked the thermostat and pipes, a ll to no avail. Possibly a blocked radiator.

Generally quite rattly interior.

Alloy wheels (fitted as standard) are prone to corrosion. When under warranty the dealers would re-lacquer them, but by now they are getting a little old.

General comments?

In the course of servicing it has had

New clutch

New timing belt

New cylinder head Gasket

New rocker head gasket

and the usual oil, tyres etc.

This car is incredibly fast and will outperform at 205 1.6 GTi or an XR2i. By a long way.

The leather interior on the 500 series is very nice and with a few mods such as clear indicators the car looks very nice.

The bodykit can fade and it looks nice to be colourcoded.

Surprising amount of space in boot.

No front mounted speakers.

Handles excellently and is very reliable (if prone to overheating!!!) and is an excellent car for young guys.

Good review, I own and have wrote a review on the GT500 and agree it is a cracking car.

I think I've got the same problem as you with overheating, the temp gauge goes nearly into the red before the fan comes on and I've had it checked at a Citroen garage, but they say its normal which I don't believe for one minute.

Anyway, I should be getting a VTR engine dropped in sometime next year for a bit of extra power.

What colour is your GT500 by the way? Is it kind of grey/black with the silver grille at the front?

I had a GT500 for my last car and I loved it to bits, but god, how unreliable!

I have to admit it was a little pocket rocket, but I pretty much replaced every component in that car, but that might of been my fault for buying a high mile aged trashed motor.

I had the same problem with the overheating, it is a common fault I had a couple of times when a coolant pipe had burst off!

If it had been a reliable lump I would have kept it for years as it was so fun.

Look after the little Citroen and it will look after you.

Happy driving.

Hi.

I was the proud owner of an Ax Gt 500 from new. In answer to the avove question about colour, the 500`s were all the same colour and it was called graphite grey if I remember and yes the silver front was standard as well. Smashing little car and lovely half leather seats, apart from the special colour and seats and side graphics they also came with a Gt500 leather keyring and Gt500 log book. I kept my keyring as a souvenior because I loved the car so much!
