"Low budget screamer"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine mounting failed at 50,000 miles.

Exhaust system blew.

Head gasket blew at 65,000.

Seats started to wear very badly.

My clutch went at 48,000 and again at 60,000.

General comments?

The car felt pretty nippy in standard form, however, I have since treated it to a gas-flowed and ported cylinder head, a full performance exhaust system, a K&N air filter, Kent fast-road camshaft kit, and a set of twin 40 dcoe carburettors and it bloody flies. It has just made 130 HP on the rolling road and it eats GTI's for breakfast.

The seats have been replaced with the half leather, late spec GTI interior which is much better quality than the original seats, but comfort levels are just as brilliant as before, and very supportive.

The car is a bit noisy on long journeys, but not bad for a car of this specification as it is purely a drivers car.

The handling on this car is by far the most rewarding I have ever experienced and really does inspire confidence like no other car. This is helped by the lower and stiffer springs and dampers I have fitted, as well as uprated bushes.

Overall I would have to say that this car has to be the best pocket rocket to buy and modify on a low budget!!

Strange...I have the same car for 17 years and 115000 miles with the same 1.4 l motor and everything (but for the alternator at 65000 miles) is the original stuff. Maybe your car has not been serviced properly, or brutalised by the the previous owner...

Cracking car mate! I remember driving one of these (standard) and laughing like an idiot. My mate has a modified 106 Rallye kicking out about 125 bhp and that's a giggle too. Enjoy! Nothing handles like a Pug!
