Fuel pump.
I just love this big 2 doors boat. Heavy and powerful. I bought this car from a man who unfortunately became paraplegic and we keep in touch. It takes almost 3 Honda civic to have the same length of my big Oldsmobile. I own 2 other Oldsmobile, but this big one is my favorite (My girlfriend doesn't like it, but it's MINE!). the sound of an Oldsmobile 455 when you push on the gaz is awesome!!.wherever I go I can see people looking at it or hear them say. (My god it is so big!!). Gas consuming might be a problem, but the value it still gains over the years worth this enjoyable spending. I intend to keep this rocket engine in original condition since I have seen some with more than 300000 miles on it and keep running strong.. Long live to rocket engines!!wish they can still make cars like that again, I would buy another one on the spot!! or a delta 88..with a 455 indeed!!
Steve.
I love Oldsmobile 98 Luxury Sedans. My father and I owned a 1970 4-door Luxury Sedan and both just thought the car was terrific. I myself, love the rumble sound of an Olds 455 Rocket motor. Nothing seems to beat it! You know what I mean. Unfortunately, we had to get rid of the car.
I would love to be able to get a hold of a 1970 Olds 98 LS in great shape. The one we owned had every option you could imagine. In fact, my dad told me in 1970, The premium options used in the 98 were pre tested for use in the Cadillac. Behind the front seat, was a vanity lighted mirror with kleenex and towelette wipe holders for rear passengers.
Just wanted to let you know that you're right, the 455 rocket is the BEST.
1970 Oldsmobile did not have a (what was considered to be a rocket engine) rocket engine. It was a high-performance 455 and we could not use regular gasoline. Ours was forest green with a black vinyl top, green interior with damask seat covering, tinted windows and fender skirts. We almost had every option we wanted, we forgot about cruise control and we told them to leave off the gold pin striping. It was a beauty. On one of our road trips we were cruising at 110 across the desert between Las Vegas and Reno. A Utah cop was coming up fast, my husband said, "Oh well, it doesn't make much difference now" and slowed to 100, the cop flew around us and waved.
It was also clocked at 84 in a quarter, now bad for a big green machine. I loved the car and I would love to have it back to restore.
I think you better take a more valuable sources of information when you say that in 1970 oldsmobile didn't produce any rocket engines.. my 1972 cutlass has a 350 rocket in it and it's a low compression engine... in fact most of oldsmobile v-8 are considered rocket engines!! (trade mark) there is no considerations for low or high compression engines.. the only condition is that it has to be an oldsmobile v-8 (307,330,394,400,403,455 etc..) that's all folks!!
Today I just got a 1970 delta 98 l/s 4dr 455 pwr driver seat and windows and a/c. it has 132,000 org miles and is a gold color. i have known the car all its life as for it belonged to my grandfather that recently past away it has been sitting for about 5 or 6 months and after checking the oil and water it started right up. I am so happy to of gotten this car it puts me back in time to when I was 16 and my grandfather used to let me drive it!
I have two of them. 1970 98 olds with a 455 rocket. One LS and one convertible. LS has front end damage, but can be fixed. Like new engine and interior. My dad drove it off the show room floor in 1970. I got the convertible for parts to fix it, but couldnt bring myself to take any parts off. The convertible is in great shape. I have a tag on it right now. I don't know what to do now. To fix or not to fix. By the way dad is 84 and dosent drive any more, and I was only doing this for him. Any way I have two of them. If any one is interested in them or has front end parts for the LS give me a ring at 423 282 6869. Jerry,
I have a 1972 Oldsmobile 98 with the 455 rocket and it is the BEST car it only has 36000 miles on the title and it has a new carborator and a new back frame and ya it has an unbelievable amount of power all I have to do to burn out is touch the gas an it takes off.
I have a 1968 olds 98ls with the 455 rocket. The car is great to drive, but adding the lead to the fuel, lots of fuel, is a downfall. It had 38000 miles when I bought it, everything is original except brakes and exhaust. Car is in great shape, I bought it from a man in California. It was his wifes car since it was new, it was her grocery and church car. She passed away years ago and it's been stored in a garage ever since. No rust, but the California sun took it's toll on the lacquer paint so it's a little faded. Wish they still made cars like that.
When I was a Senior, in 1979, I found a 68 98. It was PERFECT! 72,000 miles, interior was spotless and the exterior had NO RUST. It was also a four door HARDTOP. Sale price. Are you ready for this? 250.00 bucks. That's IT. I took it to my dad and he said take it to the tire shop and if the AC held a charge, stop by and he would cut the check, and it did. It was a GREAT car. It was like going down the road in your living room. I will never forget that I was late for a rehearsal at my high school, and my friend Hank and I were in the 98. I held it down and let it go. When we crossed the 20 miles to home mark, I said Hit your watch. 7 minutes and 15 seconds later we had traveled the 20 miles. NO LIE! It was a great car, and when I kept it below 160, it got around 16 miles to the gallon. 455, 4bbl, pwindows, pseat, psteering, tilt, telescoping wheel, dial up cruise, (my brother called it dial-a-death) thermostat controlled air, am/fm. you name it...
I will own another, maybe a convertible...
Rich.
Hi I live near timmins ontario, 5 years ago I inherited from my old man a 1970 98 4 doors (which he bought new) with 427000 miles on the odometer, you read it right! he was a foreman and he kept records of all the spendings made on the 98, he changed once the transmission and 3 times the carburetor, the front bench seat (not the same model and color from another 98 I believe,) and driver's door panel and normal wear stuffs like brakes, shocks, rad. etc... now it has 432000 miles and have the intention to make a complete overhaul even if the rocket 455 still starts every time and still going strong, men! this car is unbelievable!!, you are all right! the rocket 455 is the best engine ever made
I have a 350 rocket motor in my 86 olds cutlass and I have 600 hp off the motor and 430 off the wheels when you make that much off of your 455 you will need anther body to beat me due to near a thousand pounds so I would not say that your boat anchor is at all powerful.
I once owned a 1970 Olds 98 two-door sedan. It sounds a lot like the car described above. It had power everything and dual sofas to lounge on. Just touching the accelerator pedal with my big toe would take the car to its favorite speed of about 45 mph. It had a working AM radio, and I installed a modern tape-deck under the front bench (so as not to spoil the dash). All the same, I seldom switched either of them on, because the thrum of the big block power plant under the hood was all the music I wanted. The car developed a few minor problems over time, but I redoubled my maintenance efforts and nothing critical ever broke. Alas, I moved to Europe in 1993, and was forced to sell the car (purchase offers were a regular occurrence for the entire time that I owned my Ninety-Eight). One last memory: After being away for almost 4 years (!!), I inflated the tires and jump-started the car for one last week or so together before the sale was to occur. After the battery was recharged I had gone for a swim at the local community center. When I came out I inserted the ignition key, and naturally gave it just a quick flick, as I had always done to start the motor humming. It was just old habit, but I was absolutely amazed that the car immediately sprang to life, as ever. That made me realize what a gem I was about to lose. It may sound absurd, but I miss that car.
I recently bought a 1970 Olds 98 convertible on the sight unseen from a dealer on the Internet. I've had my share of problems being a Midwest car, but the paint was new and the original interior is excellent. I since put about 3,000 miles on the car in the last 6 months, and I love this car! It will spin the tires from a stoplight with just a quick jab of the accelerator. I've passed everybody going uphill on the freeways and around town. This car will cruise at 90 all day with a full load and the A/C on. I get requests all the time to sell my gold convertible, but no way. I had a '64 98 Holiday Sedan back in high school. I love these big Oldsmobile's. Very reliable, powerful and comfortable.
I have a 1968 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday Coupe (2dr) its on this site for review it has a 455 V-8 it has well over 382,000 miles I've seen em go much much longer my main problem with my olds is the electrical is starting to crap out, but the motor still starts like the day it rolled off the line I love the look honda's give me when I'm on the freeway they can't figure how a 2dr can be so big.
PS my uncle has a 455 from a 74 delta with supposedly 450k on it maybe more
Just do your regular service and it will last for ever
Hello my name is Nick and recently I have been inquiering for the purchase of an olds 98 which is around this time era, not too sure exactly if it's a 68'-70', but nevertheless this car is pretty nice for the price, a convertible, with leather interior, and 42,000 miles- all this for 2,500$. However I plan to invest another 5-6 grand in repairs, paint, rims & tires, a sound sytem, and car alarm/ automatic car starter. Even if I left the car in its current condition, it would still be pretty nice, but with the modifications I plan to make, it will only perfect it and increase its value to about 10-15 grand... any feedback would be appreciated. I'm 17 so this is an awesome first car that I would actually own.
I just went to look at a 1968 OLDSMOBILE DELTA 88 with the infamous 455 rocket, the car has rust in the bottom part of it, but for 600$ canadian, I am seriously thinking about buying it! The engine still purrs like a kitten and the mileage is 116000 miles. On top of that, it is a 2 door car, what a beast and the fast back is slick looking! I live in Winnipeg MB CANADA.
