"Nice looking cheap car that is a electrical fault nightmare with dealers who are useless"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

First Day - Fuel Injection Fault. Car had to be recovered after 67 miles. Unknown problem which a battery disconnection and set solved.

Trip computer every so often tells me that my average fuel consumption is circa 94 miles to the gallon.

3 x faulty tyre pressure sensors replaced.

Intermittent computer reports of electrical issues. Mainly Fuel Injection or Tyre pressure sensors.

Air conditioning system does not work properly - ongoing battle to solve.

Keys have been replaced as they refused to open or lock the car.

Power steering solenoid failed - caused engine to cut in outside lane of a by pass.

Keys do not always open the boot - ongoing issue.

Electrical problem with dials. Speedo and rev counter spinning backwards and forwards whilst stationary and driving. Resolved itself, but still and unexplained problem.

Acceleration very jerky at low speeds. I have stalled this car more times an all my others put together, including when I first learnt to drive.

General comments?

Do not buy this car unless you know that your local Renault dealer is exceptional.

Doors have week springs so that they close back on you easily.

Driveability of the 1.8 is poor.

Compared to my 406 Estate this car is not very smooth or comfortable.

Rear doors collect water so when you open them after rain you have to step back to avoid get a boot full.

Rear tail gate collects water so that when you open it you have to step back and let the water drain out before you can get to the rear space.

The Air conditioning should be the same as my 406 but alas it is not. Completely useless.

This is a company car and will get changed at 60k miles. Fantastic only 25K miles or 8 months to go before the nightmare is over. Thank goodness it is not my money. Anyone got some bricks?

Just for balance two good things about this car. Integral rear door blinds and split rear hatch - when it closes properly.

Oh did I mention Renault dealers - I hate them. I complained at my local one recently because I have spent so much time there that I have read all their magazines.

Small point about the card not opening shutting car etc, I have found with mine that the contacts on the battery must be sensative as a quick press were the battery sits solves the problem everytime. I have also noticed that they appear to be very sensative to interference. Mine were completly wiped out by a remote control extender in the house, they didn't work at all until I unpugged them (surfice to say I took it back to the shop), where as my Ford remote keys worked fine!

It's a shame you've had problems, mine has had its problems as well, but one overiding thing keeps me happy - V6 210bhp - bloody great.

I too have a 1.8 petrol, privilege model - hatch not estate. I'm so glad it's a company car as this means I get a free replacement whenever it's in for repairs. Problems I have had:

Delivered with faulty gearbox - wouldn't stay in 2nd gear, needed new gearbox.

Ashtray wouldn't open - would've been more than annoying if I was a smoker.

Power steering failed after 30k.

Tyre pressure monitor electronics are exposed to the elements on the underside of the car. This has twice lead to them being damaged by driving through standing water.

I also get the same problems with the boot lock, aircon misting the windscreen and 90+ MPG readings.

I had a Mondeo before & I wish I'd got another, but I was seduced by the Laguna's looks and high spec.

The Renault dealers are rubbish (I've tried 2 different ones) it took ages to get the tyre pressure monitor fixed - they kept ordering the wrong parts. I did get £100 of vouchers when I complained - fortunately I needed a roof rack & bike carrier so I got those for free.

Definitely don't buy one.

I am currently having problems with my 1.6 expression laguna 51reg. I have had problems with boot lock and tyre sensors, but all have been fixed relatively hassle free by the local dealer.

Just had it serviced and noticed that the air conditioning wasn't working. Dealer re gassed the unit and said it was working again. Tried the air con and it didn't work. Took the car back to the dealers and they said all the gas had gone again. They said there was a leak on the unit and passed a dye though the system. The dye showed that the condensing radiator had been struck by a stone and damaged. Not covered under warranty and £700 repair bill. I have asked renault customer services if I get it repaired and drive away will it be covered if a stone hits again. They said NO. I have asked them why the car has not been designed to withstand a small stone impact and if there will be a modification to stop future occurrences they again said no. I have contacted watchdog and I am awaiting a response. Do not by a renault laguna. Im going to part exchange mine as soon as possible.

I have just swapped a Toyota MR2 Roadster for a Renault Laguna Initiale. Being 8 months pregnant it seemed the safest/most practical thing to do. However. I was driving home just now, and got a warning that the Fuel Injection System was faulty - changing gear to pull away at the traffic lights, there was intermittent power from the accelerator and I had to stick my hazards on and pull over.

I "rebooted" the car and the problem seemed to clear. Can't really do that on a motorway!

The car had only just been safety checked and warranty repaired by a Renault dealer. Luckily it's a company car so all the repairs etc. are taken care of as well as courtesy cars - but first impressions are so far not good : (

Think I would be better off squeezing into my MR2. At least I know it won't cut out in the middle of the motorway!!

I own a Renault Laguna 1.9 Diesel. It has a high mileage (140,000) on it and it is very reliable. How many cars do you know that have done this in 3 years? Cruising along in 6th gear is a great benefit. Well done to Renault for designing a great car.

Having just paid my local Renault dealer £393.00 for a 36000 mile service which included new front brake pads at over £80.00 I feel I should let other prospective buyers know about the poor quality of the car, hidden costs and poor service given by my local Renault dealer.

The car is now almost three years old and will soon be out of warranty, but having informed the dealer that the rear near side tyre keeps loosing pressure and suspecting that the alloy wheel is porous, I was told that it could be that the tyre is getting worn. Come on Renault, start training your engineers to treat customers as though they are not pig ignorant. Can you envisage what chaos that would ensue if every car with tyres that have less than 3 m.m. of tread were to start deflating, even at a low speed. I also have had the tyre sensor problem, air conditioning failure, and the rattles caused by poor build quality.

I have just been quoted almost £500.00 for new tyres (the second set at 36000 miles). The dealer checked the wheel alignment and balance yet I have got even less mileage from the second set and I do not drive anything like a boy racer at my age (62). My college who purchased an Audi A4 at the same time is laughing up is sleeve. It may have cost more to purchase, but I will soon have spent a lot more in service and tyres etc. Guess what car I will be buying when it comes to trade in time?

I had a Laguna sport tourer 51 plate it had so many problems that it would take all night to list, IE air con not work, fuel injection tire sensors, inter-cooler black smoke resulting in a warning from police, Renault finally changed the car at 72000 after pressure from the lease company, I now have a 53 plate and tomorrow we start all over again back to Renault with clutch problems, trim falling of, heat shield lose windscreen rubber falling of, these are all problems that happened on the first car I would have thought that Renault would have tried to rectify these problems, but no, the worst problem are the dealers who appear to no nothing about the car.

I have a Laguna II 1.9CDI diesel which now has over 80'000 miles on it and I never had a problem.

Very comfortable and reliable car.

Great power out of the diesel engine and loaded with extras.

Definitely can't complain.

I have a Renault Laguna estate 1.8 sport lovely car, but!! I have a problem that no Renault dealer can help me with. I have been to 3 Renault garages and 1 electrical garage. when on long journeys and cruising around 70 80 the car would cut out no warning lights no control over it at all you just have to get off the motorway asap changing down the gears just slows you down, but does not fire up again until you come to about 30mph and it may come to life some times before or you have to come to stand still, then turn the key it starts first time, but it doesn't last long before it does it again. Once it starts doing it you might as well wait for a tow, because it can get annoying.

I have a 1997 Laguna 1.8 Petrol Phase 1. Absolutely, without doubt, the worst car I have ever owned, and I've had some real bangers. I've had it two weeks, so far the front wiper motor has had to be changed, the thing is permanently misted up (unless I open the driver's window full and turn all blowers off - not really suitable for the winter!), turning left results in a terrible screeching noise, and the gear box is as smooth as a tractor's.

Please, for your own sake, do not buy a Laguna!

03 Laguna Initiale.

My 'current' problem is that the boot and spilt glass won't open, except when you crawl into the boot and flip the catch with a small screw driver.

Mines done 133K miles now and the only major problem was a leaking cylinder head at 101K.

Key Fob problems. These can be fixed quite simply. Both mine eventually failed, and what goes wrong is there are 2 little pressure switches that lock/unlock, which detach themselves from the mother board inside. You could hear mine rattling!!! I cut around my plastic key on three sides with a junior hacksaw, peeled the front and back of the key apart, repositioned the switches, and held them in place with cellotape. I then taped the key back together. End of problem!
