A bearing went out at 300,000 miles and caused a fire in the alternator, melting the plastic and a belt.
The stereo is temperamental, it goes on and off when it wants to. Like there is a short somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it in the few years that I have driven it.
Door handles break easily and so do the ash tray rails.
Not much else has gone wrong with the car, the gas mileage isn't very good, it guzzles gas like there is no tomorrow. I fill up the tank ($23) every Sunday.
When I received this car it was free and in very bad shape - it ran rough, the car smoked and the brakes were bad. I made a few minor adjustments in the motor, changed the brake pads and all the life came back to the car. It is the quietest car I have ever had the pleasure of driving. It runs beautifully. I am amazed at how long this car has lasted and hope for many more years to come.
I like how this car can get up to speed, with a slight touch of the gas pedal. Would be a good car for drag racing (don't get any ideas). Right now I am looking at a 1992 Cutlass Ciera Oldsmobile, with 50,000 miles on a rebuilt.
These are seriously great cars, they are safe, reliable, and easy to maneuver! You deserve a Cutlass Ciera Oldsmobile.
I love the Oldmobile Cutlass. My dad lets me take it to Atco Raceway in New Jersey. It has a 3.3 liter bone stock with 120000 and it ran a mid 15's at 113 mph. My Point it beats stock mustangs. Very fast car for a kid like me.
The fuel pump had to be changed at 78,000 miles
Ignition problems, major one's when cold
Mass air flow sensor changed at 79,000
Rack and Pinion changed at 84000.
Great car to drive, but only if you have the money to invest in repairs.
Like the speed, and the handling.
Very nice ride.
I to own an 87 Cutlass Cierra (or is it that it owns me?) I agree that it is a great power car (upsets my oldest son when we take off from the same stop light together - he has a little 89 mustang). However in the 3 years I have owned it I have replaced the alternator twice. all brakes around including hoses, rotors, calipers, pads etc., the starter (mind you to change a starter in this it is a 5 1/2 shop job!) changed (not sure what it's called... brain board??) under the 3 caps the plug wires go into, and still have problems with that. lots track of times changed the door handles (one night leaving grocery store both handles broke... (sent youngest/smallest son thru trunk and back seat to get doors open for us!) and now finally the crank pully keys are going... so the baby is parked for now.
I am the original writer of this review!
I was 16 when the car (Olds) was given to me, I am almost 21 now, I have owned since then:
1997 Chevy Malibu
1999 Chevy Cavalier 2 door
1995 Buick Regal Custom coupe
2004 Ford Focus SE (brand new)
1987 VW Jetta GLI
2005 Dodge Neon SXT (brand new)
And I have to say that I loved The Oldsmobile the most.
The Buick and the Oldsmobile by far have been the best running and most reliable. Even my newest car 2005 Dodge Neon SXT with manual shift sometimes won't start. Reliability I don't think so.
Well I am glad to hear that there are more Cutlass Ciera owners out there that are happy with there cars. Good luck! And for the others that are not so happy maybe its time to retire "the Beast."
I will be honest I bought my 87 Cutless Ciera from an 81 year old man for $200 in 2008. And the only problem he had was starting issues. He put a brand new battery in it, expecting it wouldn't last long, but as of now, I have had the last laugh. Granted the AC is dead, and like another person said the radio is tempermental, (it picks up Channel 7 every once and a while hahaha) I have yet to have any major issues. It passed on the first smog check and the mechanic laughed. Runs fine, even the MPG is OK. Gets me from point A. to point B. That is what is important. The 87 Cutless is a solid reliable vehicle. And GM should be proud.
