Nothing major has gone wrong with the car.
The only thing is that it won't go into reverse right away, you have to play
around with the gear box and then it finally goes in.
The interior has a funny smell to it.
Doesn't burn a drop of oil after all these years of wear and tare.
Very cheap on gas.
Engine is still peppy.
I totally agree with you about the gearbox, I have a 1993 Honda Civic DX (120k miles) and its always a swine to get into reverse. Putting it into neutral and engaging and disengaging the clutch always seems to sort it, don't know why.
Try this: 2nd THEN 1st then reverse. You have to reset the transmission by moving the shifter to 2nd gear then 1st, then select reverse. The transmission has mechanical protections to keep the driver from damaging it, i.e. selecting 1st gear at high speed (relative to gear) and from selecting reverse when moving forward. By moving to 2nd gear first, you will find that the shifter moves easily to 1st gear (no matter what speed) and subsequently you will find that going from 1st to reverse is very smooth as well, however without any forward speed or you WILL get a grind.
