Transmission cooler return line exploded. Replaced it, the fitting then failed. I replaced that too (my car was one big ATF leak for about a week). It was severely coroded.
The fuel filter is failing.
Radio is completely unfunctional.
Spring is worn out in rear passenger door exterior handle.
Mine is not the turbo. I prefer this.
Very very comfortable. Only car I have ever had that is this roomy and nice to ride in.
Transmission is an odd design. I plan to install an auxillary cooler and inline filter this spring.
Handling is bland, though stable and predictable.
Needs new tires and shock absorbers.
I have switched to Valvoline Synpower for my oil and Napa Gold for my filters (as opposed to the quaker state and mann used by the dealer).
I plan on changing all of the fluids to increase durability.
I get only about 19-20 miles per gallon in town, I attribute this to my shotty fuel filter which I am soon replacing. I drive it hard, and it never fails me.
Gearing is very odd for a heavy car with a small engine. First gear is very tall (43mph at 6,000) - second short, third tall, 4th short.). I can go 105mph in 3rd gear. Tranny is simple and predictable in its shifting. I prefer this to the eratic methods of some electronic automatics.
There is a lot of power to be gotten from the motor. I am installing a cone intake, a new cam, exhaust, throttle body, and a few other odd things next summer.
At 176,000 miles, my car has had no major repairs. Taken care of by borton volvo - that is until I bought it.
Durable, safe, comfortable, reliable. It is a great car, however esoterically mechanically desinged.
I have to agree with you about the gearing of the tranny. Seems like it should have a shorter first gear for better take-off and longer 4th gear for better highway fuel economy and quieter cruising. However, I have experienced an auto tranny that was even worse in its gearing. My ex '92 Acclaim had a 100hp 4cyl. in a 2,800lb. car and first grear maxed out at 50mph and 4th gear was very short, making a lot of engine buzz on the highway. This Volvo tranny could have been better though.
