1981 Cadillac Seville Elegante from North America - Comments

"It was a good luck!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The transmission gasket leaked, had to replace it.

Had to change a tire too because of a flat.

The transmission wasn't shifting right (i.e. the engine would run freely for 2-3 seconds when shifting gears), the shift point has been adjusted and it run fines since.

General comments?

The V8-6-4 is now working again after the shift point of the transmission has been fixed. It offers decent performance for the size of the car. Handles pretty well.

You feel like you were in the living room, very comfy, lots of space either in front or in rear seats.

The car is almost in mint condition and won't see any winter, no idea how many it saw, but no rust on the body, almost none under the car.

I have a '81 Seville Elegante too, the performance is not mind blowing, but not at all that bad either. When I want speed I take my AMC Javelin/AMX if I want to cruise around in luxury and get some descent MPG I take the Cadillac. The handling is pretty good for a car that weighs near enough 2 tonnes!! Of course it will not beat a Opel Corsa or a Fiat Punto around a twisty country road, but again it's a big car. The only things I find is that compared to my Muscle car it has absolutely zero 'head turning' appeal as everyone seems to think you must be some rich git here in Britain, but I have been made out for worse things than that!

No, the comment above is incorrect. even a 6.0 litre land yacht with all the smog equipment is quicker to 60 than 22 seconds. that kind of 0-60 is even slower than the morris minor 1000...

I think you are confusing this particular cadillac model with the 350 diesel engined seville, which had the 22 second 0-60 time. thinking about it, what would you expect from a naturally aspirated diesel producing 120 bhp? not neck snapping acceleration, certainly. as for the handling, who ever bought a cadillac for its handling prowess? if you look at other contemporary vehicles from the same era, the cad wasnt too bad in comparison.

Cads back then were mostly suited to wafting along straight freeways at 55 mph soaking up all the bumps and potholes in leather clad luxury, A beemer has nowhere near the same presence and class as a cad.

Strange how just about every cadillac model ever made has become a classic car eventually, even the seville...

Whilst the BMW 2002Ti is about the only classic beemer I can think of.

Not all Seville's have the same 0 to 60 performance levels. I own one, a 6 liter engine, the diesels and six clys were slower. The variable displacement engines are quick. I also, owned 1985 Trans Am with 305 HO tuned port fuel injected motor, as well as a 1981 cadillac sedan deville with the 368 variable displacement engine. I love this car!!! It is now 24 hours old and still like new. It just a decision to make weather you want a fast car like the TA which was junk or a quality car in all aspects of transporting you to where you are going in comfort and elegance.

My '82 seville is a 350 diesel engined version, and it is damn slow. However, I bought it because it was a diesel and it will get 30mpg- about double what I am led to believe the petrol engined ones average. I miss the performance of a big petrol V8 but fuel prices were becoming an issue. whereas you can run a diesel engine on cooking oil!

From about 1976 to 1985 several Cadillac Sevilles were converted to right hand drive. And during this same time frame, several Sevilles were "treated" to a Gucci "conversion." I would like to learn more about both the right hand drive conversions (who did them, how and so on) as well as the Gucci Cadillacs. If you have any information on these, please contact me at gjterranov@aol.com. Thank you.
