The Catalytic converter went 3 months after buying the car.
I needed a new engine 1 month later.
It won't idle correctly.
It won't start sometimes.
It keeps breaking down.
It also got a new manifold sensor, fuel pump and coil block and it still won't idle or start correctly.
The sunroof leaks.
The air bag light keeps flashing.
This car is great to drive and handles well, when it chooses to start. I really wish I knew how to fix it as I've tried just about everything. Any ideas?
Sorry mate no advice, but I know how you feel. My peugeot r reg has had all the problems yours has had, but a few more.
Like the head gasket. and now the clutch has gone, all this and I didn't even thrash it. also I've had three minor dents put in it buy other drivers. I wish I never bought the thing its cost me well over 20k for every thing including insurance. do you reckon theres any thing we can do to get some of our money back. brett_wheeler91@hotmail.com.
Sounds like you have had a complete nightmare, however although most gti`s are usually bug-free there are always a few that are unfortunately like yours.
I've had a lot of dealings with Peugeot garages as I use to own a 106 xsi and the only thing I can tell you is that if you have bought a car direct from a dealer and after a few months in needs a new engine I would get yourself straight to your solicitors, and then make them take the car back!!
Peugeot customer service is not worth even talking to as there purely useless, Unless you have a big wod of cash 4 them like when you bought the car, then there happy to talk to you arnt they!!!
Bit of a long shot, but did you manage to sort out your idling problems, as my 106 GTI is suffering exactly the same mid-life crisis? Any ideas on how to fix it would be great. Ta.

With regards to the idling problems, get a Peugeot dealer to check your oxygen sensor (attached to the exhaust manifold). Mine was faulty a few months ago and was causing me terrible idling and acceleration problems. During a regular service Peugeot told me it was faulty and offered to replace it for £90 + VAT! But I picked one up from a scrapyard for £25 all in; it was from a Peugeot 306.
I am having all the same problems with mine too! Its such a nice car, but I can't put up with all of it's issues! It won't start properly and sounds rough, its done a few miles bless it, but I want it fixed asap! Peugeot have been less than helpful, telling me it is the 'Blocked fuel injectors'...what a load of rubbish! They think they can pull the wool over my eyes because I'm a girl! I have tried everything...!!! Nobody knows what the mysterious problems are! Someone out there must know... HELP ME PLEASE!!! Gemmaandgreg@ntlworld.com.
Yes I am another girl who Peugeot have managed to rip off big time. I am having all the same problems with mine however I only had it a day before I found out the catalytic converter had blown. Thankfully Peugeot repaired this for me along with the radiator that had fallen apart and the brake disc's which were rusted and pitted I do believe though this was due to the fact that I stormed into their garage and cried my eyes out!. My engine still will not idle correctly though and I have had a lot of trouble getting it to start and there are constant rattling noises which I can't seem to locate can anyone out there please help me?. Ideas and solutions to xxlouisexx@blueyonder.co.uk Thank you.

I am a mechanic for Toyota, this is now my third Peugeot in 2 years. my first was a 1.4 XSI which idled eratticly and suffered from a bad flat spot (lack of power) just before 4,000 RPM, which I did not cure, I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the injectors due to its high mileage. I know own my 106 GTI which I love to bits although having the same faults, I have been lead to believe the fault lies with in the MAP (Manifold air pressure) sensor which give the ECU a false reading causing the air/fuel mixture to be too lean, I am due to be changing this part next week so I shall keep you all posted. Adam.
I own a peugeot 106 gti 98 (s) and found it to start idling erratically and loss of power. The car sumtimes wouldn't start also. I put it in a garage and they replaced the oxygen sensor and the car runs like new, anyone with these problems should look into it as peugeots have are renowned for sensor faults.
Peugeot mechanic and owner of a 106 gti here mines extensivley modified running over 150 bhp, but as others have sed check your map sensor and your coil pack (these should come up on (diaogs) also make sure the fule filter is new and that the idle controll valve is cleaned out,106s are renowned for getting water /condensation in there tanks hope you can get it sorted mines been a wonderful car and the extra 30 bhp allows me to chase clio cup 182s and 206 18os all day long haha.

Hi I own a 106 xsi and my clutch went last week know the thing won't start for me the orange light has come up. It backfire and stalled and now its not starting. Can someone help me plz thanks.
In response to the comment about chasing Clio 182's, my best mate has a 54 reg (normal one, not the Cup version). On paper they're quite a bit faster than a 106 GTi, so when I got my new one the other day I went out and raced him in it.
We took off from the lights, and by the next roundabout, about three quarters of a mile away, he was only about 2 car lengths in front of me.
Believing it was down to his poor driving, we swapped cars and raced back the way we came, this time with me in the Clio and him in my 106. Once again, at the lights we raced from the first time around, the Clio was in front by about three car lengths, which isn't really a lot.
His Clio is bog standard, my 106 is a T reg which only has a K&N induction kit (as fitted by the previous owner). Both were running on super unleaded.
The point I'm making is that for the price of them, they're excellent value for money. For a car in insurance group 13, it keeps up with a group 17 motor in a straight line and I can easily beat my mate's car (with him driving) on twisty lanes.
Obviously some of it is down to the driver, but I paid £4000 for a low mileage 106 GTi, and he paid 12 grand for a 182 with similar mileage. If performance is all you're after for little cost, get a 106 GTi - you won't regret it.
Alright! I have a 106 gti R reg (98) and I bought it for 4000 thinking it was a minter. It only had 45000 on it.
I've now had it for 4 months and I've had a new gearbox, clutch, headgasket silencers and it still isn't running correctly, but since I have removed my sub, which was connected to the battery, it seems to have stopped and it only does it now and again. I'm having it diog'd today to see what it is. I'll let you know.
Oh and by the way, my gti has 141bhp and I can stay with the Clio and the Civic Type R no probs haha!

I don't have the gti version, but have had a 106 (1998 zest2) for 4 months, and it's had more problems than there is space to write them. I would never recommend a 106 again I'm afraid, and all the things I have read online say the same - no-one seems to know how to fix its many problems. Such a shame, because when it's working, it's such an awesome car to drive.
Trying to sell it now, but my neighbours have not only driven in to it, but some kids kicked a football against it and scratched the paintwork. The world's against 106 owners!
That's some bad luck that is. Stay away from all French Motors they are plagued with hassles.
Had my 1997 R reg gti for just over a month and a half now. just this weeks its started to backfire and bump around, had a diagnostic check done yesterday and it turns out to be the coil pack, which will need replacing costing £150 new! at the same time also found out that I need two new front arms. apart form that the car has been fantastic. recently put a pug sport exhaust on and it has made the world of difference, aswel as sounding amazing. I'm prity sure these cars would keep up with expensive cars on the track! for 1500 pound which I paid you can't go wrong.
