-The 2.5-liter FI is slow, slow and slow. When you floor the gas pedal the engine makes a lot of noise, but you can hardly feel it moving. When traveling up hill, the engine struggles to maintain the vehicle speed even though the gas pedal is floored. Top speed is only 120 km/hr. Passing power is nil. It's so slow that at times it's dangerous if you try to pass a car on a 2 lane highway.
-Noisy in the cabin.
-Parts are expensive (eg. pinion shaft yolk- $600)
600 for yolk... you got ripped off.
Those repairs are all common things to go wrong on any car, and it's a FOUR CYLINDER TRUCK! If you want fast, don't buy a truck with a 4 cylinder and a 7 foot bed.
I've found the 2.5L does fine on most circumstances and only seriously struggles when trying to accelerate up the very steep mountains around here from a stop, but even then only from 40-55mph above or below that hole it does OK. Hill climbing power really frustrates me living way up in the rockies and when this second engine blows I'm putting in a 4.0L ;) At slower in-town speeds and on flats, however, its got enough power to pull our 18ft flatbed trailer loaded down with cement or 1 1/2 cords of wood and without it being loaded down with a camper shell or such I can squeal the back tires from a stoplight a lot of people have asked me if its got a deisel because the exhaust rumble is also so loud after seeing it do that.
From brand new the 4 bangers are a very good engine for a 4 banger and last a heck of a long time if well maintained, I got 250,000 very abused mainly towing and off-pavement miles on the first and working on a second. It's also nice to get 400 miles on a tank of gas @ 26-28 MPG in a truck on extended cross state road trips.
