On the plus side, the Tracker has plenty of room.
Now for the negative:
It is not the car for emergencies or fast take offs when you need speed to avoid problems. Even new it lacked power.
The design and the lightness of the vehicle allows the wind and passing trucks to move the vehicle from it's lane. This causes the driver to fight to maintain control. I call it the kite.
It uses a large amount of gas for a light vehicle with a small engine. I expected better than 25 mpg open highway when the vehicle was new.
The design causes instability in driving. Since the weight is not distributed properly in the design it creates a problem when such actions as swerving occur due to objects on the road, an animal or if someone pulls out in front of you. The Tracker starts to "roll" by weaving from side to side requiring very experienced driving skills to recover.
It is extremely poor in rain or snow. Traction very poor even with new snow tires. Chains have been required by the tracker when another 2 wheel drive has not required it.
The rear wheel drive creates problems because it is on the body of what should have been a front wheel drive. It pushes when it should pull creating a greater skid which is harder to control. I have been in many of them with the tracker.
Body construction is very flimsy. Since it is suppose to be a utility/sport vehicle, I expected stronger construction. A neighbor backing into the front of the tracker while she was parking and took off the bumper. Due to this bump we had several problems caused by the design of the tracker. It was repaired by a very good body company.
First our grille fell out which was traced to the bumper following off.
Our front passenger door later pulled loose and cannot be reattached properly. Rust got into the area where the bumper came off at and rusted out the panel. The door is hanging by it's main hinge and cannot be used unless someone opens the door for you.
I say the Tracker is a good little car, but it was never meant for the off roding it was said to be for. The Tracker is best for people in high school or college. But not for the every day drive around to work or shopping and is definitely not the best for long trips.
I was going to buy a snowmobile, but bought a 122k mile '93 Geo Tracker lsi with ac for $1200, instead. Set up with tire chains on the rear wheels it is an excellent ice fishing machine. I take it all over Lake Winnipesaukee, a 22 x 8 mile NH lake with ice 18" thick and while the ac has not been needed, the heater, sides, roof, windshield, 4 seats & am-fm cassette sure have. If the ice fishing season keeps going into july then the ac will be nice!
I currently own a 1994 Geo Tracker with a bit more than 165,000 miles.
Original motor, original trans, original EVERYTHING!
With regular maintenance, I have had NO problems at all.
Hell, it doesn't even burn any oil.
I think you just got a bad tracker out of the 250K tracker there are out there.
All Trackers are excellent!
Most people think they're different Jeep models. Remember that Trackers aren't Jeeps! You can go off-road unless is lift, new suspension, big tires and strong engine.
I currently own a 1994 Geo Tracker. Rockfather 8 inch lift is already in the budget, just waiting for the release of it so I can strap her on. 184 000 Kilometers on the old girl. Small tranny noise when clutch let out in neutral (any ideas anyone)?? Body needed work when purchased, and I have never had any problems with the doors. Put a new sound system in it (Dual audio deck, 1500 watt Sony amp, 2 JL Audio 12 inch subs, four JL Audio base speakers, Sony 1200 watt amp) and the ladies love it. Had to cut the fenders to fit mudders under it, couldn't afford a lift kit at the time. All in all, the tracker has been amazing too me. No engine trouble, check engine light has never come on. Only complaint - bad choice of color. Baby Blue just doesn't spell rock crawler too me. Flat Black soon too come. Happy Truckin!!
I have a 1992 Tracker; I adore it! It has a little over 155,000 miles on it and still purrs like a kitten. Needs a little body work, resembles a wind tunnel on the highway, and is tipsy around turns, but that's all I can really say bad about it. I am very satisfied with my Tracker. Oh, it could be better on gas.
