"Some sonata's never break down, some fall apart when pointed at"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Light in left-front door broke

Left-front electric window failed

electric mirrors failed

right-back window needed adjustment

automatic gearbox failed nearly immediately after I got it

automatic gearbox failed completely at 84000 kilometers

Too many braking noises

sigarrette lighter jumped out into interior

Vent system of fueltank failed, gave trouble while refilling the car, solved it self

Central locking mechanism didn't always open the locks in one try

exhaust leaked

Everything eventually repaired under warranty.

General comments?

Car is very comfortable and drives great

The 2.0 liter 16V engine is powerfully and smooth. Generally you won't hear it at all, Except when the automatic gearbox is broken.

The car is also economic with fuel for its size.

Hyundai is known to build reliable cars, however if you have bad luck you get a complete nightmare.

So buy this car if you can get a good warranty on it. That way you can dump it if yours turns out to be a nightmare. If your lucky, you'll be very happy to be driving a sonata.

I owned my Sonata 1997 GLE for over five years now. I am using it everyday to go to work travelling over 100 kms a day. I am always warming up my sonata for five minutes because my expert mechanic told that the oil doesn't go up quickly when you turn the key ignition, the manual book stated that its not needed to warm it up even cold start, but that's their catch so that your engine will wear so quickly. The engine is noisy over 130 km/h, but hey look the mileage is already over 215,000 kms. At 150,000 kms my alternator and clutch gave up, but the cost of the repairs are cheap, but then I didn't choose a genuine replacement parts of it.

It has a roomy back seat, lively and responsive 2L 16V engine (but noisy), the only problem I am experiencing now is my brake, it's creating lots of noises, but the dealer mechanic said that the disc brakes needs replacement.

I am now saving to buy a latest HYUNDAI SONATA...

I have owned my 1997 GLS Sonata for the last 6mnths.

The car is very reliable and a pleasure to drive. I changed from a 1994 Merc 190E and find the Sonata a much nicer car to drive.

What is the factory setting in revs??? I cannot get mine below 1500 and it just seems to be that little bit to fast?
