2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 from North America - Comments

One week after purchasing my Jetta (car of my dreams) the Engine light came on. By the time the dealership could get me in, the light was off. A week later, same problem. They told me that my I had to click the gas cap 3 times to secure the pressure, failing to do so was setting off the light. Every 6 days or so the light comes on STILL! I tried to take it to Jiffy Lube as well as numerous other lube shops and NO ONE will change my oil. So rather than paying $15 for an oil change, I have to take it to VW and pay $42.98! Now today my EPC light came on in the McDonalds drive through and of course VW can't get me in until next week. Too bad I have a 300 mile business trip to drive this week!! I always wanted a Jetta, but now I miss my 95 crappy Cavalier!!!

I currently own a GLX and couldn't be happier. It is very unfortunate that you see your problems with the car to be a pain. There isn't a car out there that you can buy that is worry free!! I think your complaint is very minor and I think you should look at how well the car is built compared to others in it's price range. I have driven a few different BMW's and would have to say that the VW is a very well built car in comparison. If you think you can buy any other car and not have a problem, then you are pretty naive.

I just bought a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6. It has 58,000 miles on it and is a 5 speed. It's a beautiful car, but I have had it 3 weeks and the paint has peeled off the cover for the heater vent in front. The center console is peeling. It seems you cannot use any kind of cleaner on any of the surfaces or it eats them away? 3 days ago, my EPC light came on and the check engine light. It started flashing an emissions check and engine check message. I'm a little scared now. I have had the car a few weeks and already having problems. I talked to two friends that have the 2000 jetta's and they have had all kinds of problems as well. EPC light coming on, gas cap has to be turned 3 times or check engine light goes off, dash control problems, cd player problems, problems with rear brakes wearing out, and brake lights going out. I am wondering if I made a bad decision to buy this car. I have always been a volkswagen fan, I am hoping this doesn't change. Also, everyone I have spoken to, 7 people, told me the dealership has the poorest customer service they have ever seen and they refuse to go there. Unfortunate for such a nice looking car.

I own a 1998 VR6 Jetta GLX and I love it. I have owned the car since 2000 when it had 60,000 miles on it. I have had to change the transmission (which was costly) and the tune-up's/brake jobs etc... But it appears normal wear and tear. The Transmission was the only 'problem' area and I currently have 131,000 miles on my car. Most repairs I can do myself like... the rubber molding on the sides likes to peel off, so I buy the double sided tape and do it myself. I take my car to a reputable garage (who work on VW's) and get all my work done there. I have heard that the 1998 was 'the last year' for less troubles with a VW Jetta and luckily, I have not had all the computer problems others have had. I would recommend the VR6, but read the manual and know... it is a pricey upkeep due to the speciality of the vehicle.

VW Jetta 2000 VR6.

I bought this car aprox 1 year ago. I'm the second owner. Drives good with no problems. The only problems I've heard with the VW Jetta 2000 are electrical. Any lights or problems you may have, 99% of the time is an electrical wire or ground wire that needs to be re-wired.

The car has a lot of power!!! Feels great to drive. Double priced parts compared to Japanese cars. VW Jettas are mostly made in Mexico, and those are the parts having problems.

I would buy a VW Jetta anytime. It's a lot better quality car compared to any American or Japanese car.

I used to have a Ford, but had problems with the transmission 2 times in 2 years, which cost me 5k to fix.

I have owned three Jetta. My last two have been made in Mexico and have had paint problems. My 2000 had to be repainted and my current one is a 2002 which is rusting out quickly around the hood, doors and wheel rims. I have noticed a lot of other Jetta with similar rust issues. I am considering trading in my Jetta and probably will not go to another Volkswagen again because of this issue. I believe there are humidity problems in Mexico which are causing the paint issues. It's too bad, because they've lost their quality and a customer.

I also have a 2002 Jetta an have experienced the same issues with rust around my hood. In addition, interiors such as the the cup holder, car charger and glove compartment handle have broken with little or no wear and tear. There are electrical problems with the side mirror defrosters. I also have the infamous VW problem where my check engine light has been on for over 3 years now and no one knows why. The turn signals and brake lights also need to replaced 1-3 times year. It is almost time for me to by a new car, and I will never by another vw again.

I own a 2000 VR6.

Bought it with 60,000 miles.

Now has 107,000 miles.

I haven't had to replace a thing.

I get 17/30 mpg.

I feel bad for those who bought lemons. I'm glad I did not.

Dealer did 3 recalls last week; it runs quieter and better than before.

EPC lights come on usually due to the recall of the BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH which makes you have no brake lights. OR O2 sensors, both of which are minor problems.

I'll drive this beauty until 180,000 miles then get rid of it.

My mechanic said VW used more Audi parts in the 2000, and 99 1/2 vr6's and the 2001-2004 are of poorer quality. I believe him. My friend's Mother has a 2001 GLX and she has MANY problems and she is jealous of my 2000 GLS VR6.

PS Don't BUY THE 2.5 JETTA; THEY ARE RATED VERY LOW!!! the 2.0T are rated a bit higher, but I wouldn't buy one. I like my VR6!!

First off, your mechanic is wrong. The later Jettas, especially the 2003+ models have much fewer problems than the earlier ones. And with regards to the Audi parts claim? Wrong also, I have no idea where your mechanic got that idea from.

And about the 2.5 Jetta - really low? Um, no. Reliability for the new MkV (2005 and up) Jettas is much better, with far less problems.

The only thing I agree with with regards to your post is your love for the VR6. It IS a great motor.
