"Good looks from outside a distance away but closer - looks cheap"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

1. Air conditioner not cold enough -

cannot be fixed by Proton.

2. Fuel meter not working if half tank

or below - Proton will not fix.

3. Seats began to wear out after few

months.

4. Strange sounds appearing at the back

seat.

5. All components door handles,

dashboard are poor material and

construction quality. If removed it

is almost impossible to put them

back.

6. Service center - they cannot fixed

problems only want payment.

Unfriendly. Looks like Proton is the

customer to its car buyers.

7. The car is good effort, but poor QC

makes the car looks very "cheap".

General comments?

1. Excellent road handling, look

sporty, nice rim and steering.

Excellent handling.

2. I hope Proton CEO would accept

criticism and plan for better more

competitive Proton. Look at success

by Hyundai.

3. The car is good effort, but poor QC

makes the car looks really "cheap".

Maybe the components are made in a

hurry.

I bought a brand new waja for my wife's birthday and soon after she used it to travel to JB from KL in which it was raining. Upon arrival in KL she looked depressed and felt unhappy with the car since the rain drops already deposited inside the car by sliding through the 'unsecured' QC by Proton.

I do believe that since proton car design is very attractive and good looking, and if the CEO of Proton could look on this QC and come up with a better quality cars and good components, then I will the first to maintain my solid support for national car industry.

My question to Proton Management, why should your company gives double standard in term of quality (export version to UK is far better quality compared to our local market?) whereas Proton should always reminded themselves that, because of the majority of loyal Malaysian citizen buy their cars that make the company prosper until today.

My hope and advise to Proton, please try to appreciate the predicament of our own people and bear in mind, to raise money to buy a car never come cheap. So, please be more patriotic and appreciate their support to you by giving us a good quality product so I myself will be proud of to drive my own national car and without hesitation help to promote Proton as well. Please..Please..Please.

I have read many reviews concerning the Waja which of course, mostly negative... I do not own a Waja, but I have driven the car several times since my friends usually seek my opinion knowing that I really love Boy's Toys. I am not gonna pin point which area did Waja fail cause it's gonna be a long list that I try to avoid. Besides, enough negative feedback is given!

I personally think the car hasn't done much wrong given the selling price sets around RM50K or less. For the features, quality and appearance, I do not think it deserves the price tag of RM60K++. In short, Waja is overpriced!!!

In fact, all the models of our national car should be sold at a much lower price, but strangely, being a Malaysian, we are paying 30 to 40% extra for our own car in our own soil with less features and accessories while the Brits (the other side of the globe) are enjoying a much cheaper rate with better equipped "Malaysia Car" Does this make sense???

Overseas' review toward Proton isn't good at all, some car magazines consider Proton's production to be a joke. Of course, we feel sad over such comments, but we could learn a lot from their remarks. To be fair, Proton needs more time, but not at the expense of Malaysian taxpayers' money. Proton must pay attention toward customers' complaints and further refine it's existing models to match foreign car's spec & quality, rather then keeps producing new model that many considers as Junk!

With the implementation of AFTA, it is not the foreign cars that threaten Proton position, rather, the existing owners' frustration plays a major role. Proton should face the reality, look for ways to improve the car's quality & management, not denying it.

It is unwise that Proton choose to ignore public comments & criticism. After all, Time is running out.

Wake Up please, Mr. CEO of Proton.

Please do something about the noise when WAJA 1.8 reaches the speed of 110 km/j and above. I think the sound proofing is not good enough until I could hardly enjoy my stereo sys. while driving above 100 km/j.

Please do something on WAJACHESTRA SYNDROME. My 1.8, one month old had those kling klong, chit chit, zzzz brrrr sound already. Come on, CEO Tengku Mahaleel. Stop using cheap and hard plastic for interior. They will end-up with those sounds when they touch each other during maneuvering.

A frust owner.

Hello there! I'm amused and sorry for those having lots of problem with their Waja. On my part, thank God! Everything seems perfect after 1 1/2 years ride from Ipoh to KL. Bravo Proton!

My waja was the early model. The front bumper felt off one day by its self and had to pay to get it fixed.

Water leaked if it rains heavily.

Funny noise happens at high cruising speed, but never able to fix at EON.

After sale service needs to be improved and every time a lot of money is needed.

Some fortunate owners like the previous person are lucky and think that we are making up problems to denounce the national car.

To my great fortune, l sold my waja 2 months ago and got myself a new Honda city with low installment interest.

L must say my nightmare is over and l hope the city will become the most popular car.

L suggest everybody to do the same.

I owned a 1.8 proton waja for about 7 months. So far I have two major complaints against this car. Firstly when the car is traveling between 80 kmph to 100kmph there is an irritating sound like an jet engine coming from the engine. When asked at the service center, they seems oblivious to it. Seem it is part an parcel of the car. Still trying to get use to it. Any of you guys face this problem? If so, please let me know how to fix it if possible.

Second problem whenever I do a right turn on a slope, there is a knocking sound from the front of the car. Yet the service center cannot fix it. Got fed up of sending the car to the service center.

Other than these the car is quite okay except for the plastic moulding -dashboard etc that give out rattling sound here and there.

This car has potential if only the QC is improved.

One more thing, I marvel how is it proton allows their distributors to fix trinkets like sunshades at the back of the car. That thing rattles and adds on to noise to the car. Result lowered the quality of the car. Quite stupid.

Lee.

I have the same problem when doing my right turns... go to SC and ask them to re torque all the joints and suspension...!

To Lee.

1) My waja 1.8 also has this "jet engine" noise at around 90km/h to 100km/h. But I later found out that this noise comes out at 3000rpm (no more no less) regardless of speed. I can also feel a slight vibration of the steering wheel at this rev. The service centre guys can't do anything about it. My advice to you... just move on with life.

2) The knocking sound (sounds like "tong..tong") when cornering right or going over a speed bump in my case is actually caused by the front suspension spring slipping on the plate which is holding it on both ends. My service centre guy inserted water hose like a sleeve jacket on the spring ends and then re-attached the covering plates. Kautim!! Try and see.

Hello waja 1.8 owners.

I have 2 problems with my 7 month-old 1.8:

1) The fan (at the front of the engine compartment) turns on for 5 seconds, then off for 5, then on again for 5...

Isn't it supposed to stay on whenever the engine is running. And each time when it goes on and I rev the engine there's a strange howling noise. The service centre guy said it has something to do with the auto-relay thing.

You guys got any comments about this?

2) Sometimes my gear shifting mode seems to change into "power" mode for no reason. It holds on longer before shifting up. That makes the engine rev higher before shifting up. Is the renault engine/transmission designed to be so "over-clever" ah? Waste petrol lah. Got any comments ah?

Thanks,

amd.

My WAJA 1.6 (A) SE was purchased in Jan'04. Problem is that the Auto Transmission have to be kicked to '3' from 'N' instead of from 'N' to 'D' before I can transmit it to 'D' to move. Is it part of WAJA -ve symptom? Please advise.

I have owned a waja 1.8 for 15 months and have done 71,500km on the clock. Now that's a substantial distance. With proton, I guess for every one good things there are 500 bad ones, so I guess proton blew it cause I ain't buyin anymore of their 'formidable' junks anymore.

After one year all shocks were leaking (by the way I don't live in Prang Besar Estate), the transmission does whatever it feels like doing especially on 2nd where it revs like a lorry, but torques like a hondacup and it overheats at long distance at moderate speeds of 160km/h. By the way it's a performance car (at least that's what proton claims), so don't tell me 110 is what I should be driving at. By the way guys after 50,000km, you will encounter starting problems.

What I can say is that torque conversion is terrible and drive mismatch is what proton excels at. Oi, you fellas at proton including the top man, you guys are either deaf, mentally retarted or just plain half-par-six!

Plastics are of worse quality than my lunch box tuperware, makes me feel that the interior/handles etc were fabricated down at Nanyang Estate off Jinjang. Guys do something, especially you CEO's, can't you guys make cars as good as you dress? Mechanics at proton is another story, you guys could at least train your people to be more efficient.

The renault in my country with the same engine feels one hundred times better.

Guys I don't work for proton and neither do they pay me for doing their job. There have been many times when I have to tell them what to do in order for them to solve my problem and then having to pay them for servive. I think I'm stupid. Anyway just trying to help all those fools like me who believed protons tell tale story of how good the 1.8 waja is:

Vibrating noise at 80-100km/h, cause by tailpipe vibrating at its resonant frequency, you could tighten the bolts that hold it is place. Otherwise keep the exhaust and discard the car.

Try not to change petrol brands, stick to one.

If proton tell you that spark plugs are special types and cost around 40buck, they are liars. Factory fitted is NGK, I now use BOSCH.

Oil filter cost 30bucks, original renault. The engine likes a good run, so once in a way do take it to the motorway.

Always change ATF at preset intervals or you'll face gearbox gone kaput.

Though I am MAlaysian, but I agree with Mr. Jean. The Waja 1.8 had so much potential, but Proton, Ooops! They did it again... Which is screwing up big time. My unit still has that inherent 'Proton Virus' from their other models; power-window failure. Also fuel gauge meter doesn't read properly below the half-tank mark. What is with Proton? Have they formed a conspiracy with petrol dealers so that we' the car buyers will have to make more unnecesary pit-stops? Engine performance is quite good, but tends to drink petrol like a horse on hot days. I shudder to think if the same 'tidak-apa' attitude has gone into building of the Gen-2?

My Waja is close to 2 years old and the mileage is now 56,000. Well now the warranty period is over, I think the maintenance cost going to kill me.

I think sending my car to EON probably I will be wasting a lot of my time and money. Please let me know if there are good workshops for my Waja 1.8, so call only EON or Proton Edar can repair.

Anyway, at what mileage we have to change the timing belt and its related parts. The service booklet says 60K or 100K for two different engines. I don't know what engine we are using. I was told the cost for changing timing belt and other related parts will cost about RM2,600.
