"A Caprice for the Interstate"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Three alternators have been replaced, luckily I have a lifetime warranty.

Two waterpumps (also Lifetime warranty)

Three readiators (LT warranty)

Eight sets of front brakes (this car eats them)

Front spindles, rotors and wheel bearings.

A/C has gone out twice (disconnected plug)

Engine replaced at 128,000 due to blown head gasket. Replacement cost $2800 at Chevy dealer. Great target motor.

Heater core replaced at 167,000 miles.

General comments?

I bought this car 10 years ago today. Although it has had a some problems, it has been dependable and has never left me on the side of the road.

This Caprice handles fairly well due to upgraded shocks and tires. Ride is smooth even at excessive speeds on Interstates. Engine and Transmission (700R4) have performed well.

I might add that with mine being a white care, it has been virtually ignored by the police. The ultimate stealth car. I have four other cars, but this is my Interstate car of choice.

Fuel milage has been supurb. City and suburban driving averages 19-22mpg, while Intertstate driving at 55-65mph has produced 24mpg. Interestingly, at speeds ranging from 70-80 I can average as much a 29mpg. I attribute this to the 700R4 staying in 4th gear (overdrive).

You replaced the entire engine just because of a blown head gasket? I don't mean to sound rude, but are you nuts or just misinformed? A blown head gasket just means the gasket needs to be replaced, not the entire engine, unless the car was driven with a blown gasket for a long time.

I think the comment made above this one is uncalled for. The misinformed one is HIM. Water in the crankcase oil will assuredly and rapidly ruin crankshaft, connecting rod, and cam bearings. Head gasket leaks are often slow to present themselves in a definite fashion, and therefore can do much damage before being detected.

I have replaced several head gaskets on cars. Water was in the oil, but I drained it out. Haven't had a problem on any of them since then.

I would have changed the engine too. With that many miles on it it can't hurt to do so, you'd avoid any possible problems in the future. And if you aren't doing it yourself, it's worth it since you'd be spending a good chunk of change on the gasket job.

I'm glad to hear another fellow Caprice owner happy with his automobile, however I think I have a cure to your front brake problem, check the rear brakes, cause mine had the same problem when I realized that the rear brakes weren't grabbing. I replaced the front rotors, pads and bearings over a year ago on my Caprice and haven't had to replace them since, so besure to check your rear brake adjustment. as for your head gasket problem I am sorry to hear about, mine has 182,000 miles and still runs like a champ, getting 26 miles per gallon on the highway at over 85 m.p.h. Original engine and tranny. If you have any questions or need help, feel free to email me at StrongEnough78@AOL.com. I change the oil every 3,000 and the coolant every winter and summer. I do a tune up every year and mine still runs great. Please feel free to contact me on any concerns. My name is Vern.
