-The under hood wire harness was replaced during the first week I had the car. Luckily it was covered under a recall ($2500)
-I had to replace the Electronic Gas Replacement valve at 80000 miles ($224)
-Now the rear lights won't turn off! I have yet to find out how much this will cost.
I love the V6 and when this car is good, it's really good.
I would NEVER buy a Contour again because the car has been nothing but trouble. I can't wait to get rid of the stupid thing and replace it with something more RELIABLE.
My Contour has 170,000 and I have tried to kill it. It will not DIE... Great car good acceleration.
I have owned a 95 contour since new. In the begging it made me regret that I traded my Probe GT for this thing. Nine years later and 205,000 miles (same engine and clutch) I still have problems, but can't seem to dump this car. I am planning a complete rebuild of it in the near future.
I have a 1995 Ford Contour 2.5 V6 5 speed. Now the car has a Recall on it. But the time is up for the Recall. Ford Dealer Wants, seven hundred or more to do the Recall. Now I thought a Recall was a Recall. Especially when it has something to do with one's safety. So now i have to find a junked out contour for wiring. (Not a lot of luck) Now Ford has a thing that the Recall has to be done before the ten year dead line is up. Or before the car hits 100,xxx miles. My car has 90,xxx miles. But I'm two years past my ten year Recall date and I just got this car three weeks ago. What a kick in the head.
This is a reason why I would never buy a Ford product, they treat the customers like complete idiots and basically do not care about any of their concerns after the sale.
I have a 95 Contour GL 4 cylinder. There is plenty of things I read others having problems with that also have, and many have not, with mine, and I continue to use and enjoy it- BUT- there is a significant flaw which cannot be corrected due to no aftermarket or dealer part availability concerning the electrical wiring harness, which runs under, over and around the engine area. The harness was made of a brittle insulating plastic over the wire, and it cracks up leading to a electrical "short". Unfortunately, replacement is not possible; only hope is your old-time mechanic placing a manual gooey application directly to affected and surrounding area which may work to re-insulate the wire. My short resulted in the electric cooling fan to burn out, and several months earlier, I suspect, an alternator relay fuse to blow out which triggered the battery/alternator light. It is not practical to attempt to do any major repairs anywhere now to the car, as of date of this writing May 2008 because of the random, but certain wiring failure which will occur from age and heat, and no parts to correct. It's sad, I bought mine new in 95 and have had few problems other than bad pulleys, timing belt & idlers and tensioners. The automatic transmission has had a "roar" for over 5 yrs from a bad final drive bearing but still performs great. The car (dash) vibrates badly when idling if in gear, but not in neutral. Have no clue on that...
