I had the car for less than a week,
when the windows stopped going up and
down.
The engine started ticking about
a month ago, dealer replaced lifters.
Now it has a knock in the low end.
I have been told I need a new engine.
I was very suprised to see all the engine failures on this car.
I fell in love with the Intrepid,
but, It seems the engines in them are
junk.
I would like someone to E-mail me
the law suit info too.
If you are like me and loved the looks of this car, and are thinking about buying one, DON"T!!!
Man oh man! I don't blame you for not wanting to buy another Chrysler product again! This type of reliability is quite common with MANY Chrysler models. The fact that the engines and transmissions typically don't even last 100k miles is absolutely pathetic! Honestly, my 1985 Volvo 240 with 160k miles on it has been WAY more reliable than your experience with your Intrepid. It obviously pays to buy substance over style.
I just recently purchased a 1999 intrepid and guess what? the motor went out at 90,000. When I brought the car it had 87,000 miles. I haven't even had the car a good month. I have a warranty, but, they are investigating to see if it's mechanical or not. I am so glad I came on this website now I know that it's not nothing on my part. Please e-mail if there are any class action suits out there on this model bouange@aol.com Thanks a lot for this information.
My daughter bought a 1999 Dodge Intrepid 4 years ago and the car is a piece of junk. She has had major problems from day one. The engine is now gone AGAIN. Is there any where a person can go to get help? The lemon law will not help. It takes too long and does not always work. I am sure the Dodge Corporation is aware of the problems with these cars and it seems like there should be some help for people who have had major problems. If you know of anyone we can contact please e-mail me @ hawkssd@mail.bay.k12.fl.us. Thanks.
I bought a 1998 Intrepid in March of 2002. It is now July 2003 and the dealer has had my car approx. 10 months of that time. I now have a law suit against the dealership (I think it should be against Chrysler after reading all the other comments). I have had engine problems since I test drove the car. Luckily before buying the vehicle it was agreed to that when/if they figured out what the problem was, it would be covered. They have rebuilt my engine twice and supposedly the third time they put in a new short block. I have been stranded more times than I can count. It is a shame to have a new car and be afraid to drive it.
I was like others. I fell in love with the looks of the car. I would not recommend for anyone to buy an Intrepid and especially not from Royal Oaks Chrysler and Jeep in St. Peters, MO. After finding out about my lawsuit they made me pay for a rental car (that they put me in) before they would release my car. The rental car bill was approx. $4600.00. That is now added to my lawsuit. Since then my car broke down again and they towed it there (because it was the closest dealer) and they refuse to give me a rental even though it is in my extended warranty.
Next time I know not to go for looks or style, and definitely not a Dodge.
I'm an 18 year old soon to be college student. Last summer I put ever penny I had into a preowned 94 Dodge Intrepid ES with 94k miles on it. Within a month the water pump needed to be replaced, then the tires, then the starter. Not much longer then a year after I bought it I was driving in a heavy rainstorm and the engine failed. Turns out one of the pistons disengrated and I need a whole new short block or eingine for the price of 5grand. Looks like I'm going to have to junk it. I've spent over 7grand on it in just over a year and am heading into college dead broke. Thanks Dodge for building such a quality machine *cough*
To the person above who is suing the dealership: How could you possibly buy a car already knowing that it had an engine problem? On the test drive, no less! Do you think your initial test drive and inspection is just a formality? Thousands and thousands of used cars are available out there. If you knowingly choose a bad one, then you're either a fool or a masochist.
I bought my 1998 Intrepid just 4 months ago from a good friend of mine. So, I know for a fact they took great care of the inside & out of it for several years. When he told me he was going to sell it & get a new vehicle, I jumped on the chance to buy it. All of a sudden, there was an insane knocking in the engine with no prior warning what so ever. I feel lucky that my husband had borrowed my car for the day & I wasn't driving it with our two babies in it.
It's going to cost $4300 to rebuild the engine. It's been sitting at the repair shop for a month now, just waiting for us to collect that kind of money. We dropped all we had into the purchase price 4 months ago. As much as I love the car, I just don't know if it's worth repairing it after reading the other consumer reviews.
Very disappointed!!
