"This truck will pass anything, but a gas station"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Since I've only had the vehicle for a little time, not much has gone wrong. The previous owner said that a set of rear brake shoes and gas are all he ever bought for it.

General comments?

The big 7.5 Liter motor has all the power a person could ever want. The price for this, of course, is frequent stops at the gas station.

The truck rides better than any other truck I have been in. This includes newer models and other brands.

I also have an f350 and mine also can pass anything else, but it can't pass up a gas station. Mine gets about 14mpg which considering the truck is pretty good. My truck has a 351 with 85000k and still going strong.

14 mpg? I get 6! What do you do to your truck besides maintain it? I'd like to know because mine is getting really pricey to run.

Hey. This is to the guy that is questioning the 14 MPG of the previous owner. Did you notice that he has a 351 in his? I didn't think they even came that way, but with the 460, your 8 sounds just about right. The cost of swapping engines though, would buy lots of fuel.

Yes, single digits are unfortunately the norm for anything above a 400 ci. (Well, even some smaller engines (I've managed 9.5 MPG on my Tacoma before.)

Also, had a buddy with an old Bonneville that had a 400 dual barrel carb, and 8 MPG was all he seemed to be able to manage. I can't imagine what a quadra jet would do!

The truck is Great. I had the privilege of restoring mine to brand new. I have gotten 14 mph on the 7.5 liter when gently driving, but little as 8 when passing people left and right. Sounds great with dual exhaust, cold air intake helps. Things that help are performance tires and shocks. Great truck, can tow 15,000lbs no problem, I attached pics. http://www.picturetrail.com/f350baby.

I am the one with the first comment on this page, yes they did come with a 351, mine was a reg. cab long box 4x4 with an automatic. The best I ever got out of that truck was actually 16.5, but that was strictly highway at 60mph with relatively few hills. One other thing that contributes to the better mileage is that my truck has 3.55 gear ratio therefore it only ran at about 1600-1700 rpm on the highway. I only have 265/75/16's under it. I think you could probably get better mileage out of a truck with a manual, and a 3.73 gear ratio. The 3.55 is just little to high geared for the torque in the 351, the 351 just doesn't have quite enough torque to keep the truck efficient, you always have to keep your foot in it to keep it going. Actually I no longer have this truck, I sold it. I now have a 1995 Ford F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with a Powerstroke. Big difference between trucks, my new truck gets 20MPG on the highway, but it has had some modifications. A computer chip, banks turbo, performance injectors, and 4.10 gears (it used to have 3.73). I think this truck also would benefit from having a manual and 3.73 gears. The E40D and I have our differences, I don't like this transmission, but it works and that's the main thing. It doesn't shift fast enough, it seems very slow to shift. This truck will pull about anything and never downshift. It has 256k on it right now and is running great, I hope to get about 400 on it before I rebuild it, that is if the transmission holds up its end of the bargain. We'll see, I plow with it some in the winter, boy will this thing push snow! Good luck to you guys
