1984 Toyota Corona Avante from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"Decent performance for cheap!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

While there are many previous owners, the previous owners of this car I know about include: University Student, and a 'P' plater. So take these problems with a grain of salt.

Had tail-shaft re-conditioned, replaced UNI joint & centre bearing.

Rear bumper hangs off a little, I think this car has been in an accident because I also found small bits of glass down the side of the passenger door.

Alternator died.

Starter motor is beginning to die.

I believe one of the injectors is beginning to die.

Window seal damaged, all front door seals damaged, boot seal damaged, water leaks in through all these areas (really, really sucks in the Wet season in Darwin).

Drivers' seat holding is rusted a little, undoubtably due to the bad seals.

Central locking does not work for the passenger door anymore.

General comments?

This car still runs like a dream for a 4-cyl even with one of the injectors on the go. With 4 people in the car, 2 of which in the back weighing in at over 170kg, kicked the pants off a Ford Meteor GHIA 1984 model, taking the car up to 165Km/h.

Feels like most of the power is at the lower end of the revs, between 2,000 - 4,000 RPM.

The car handles averagely, nothing to write home about here. Power steering is useful in certain situations.

A/C unit still runs superb, cold even by today's standards, however it sucks up a heap of power.

Raced a ford falcon 1996 model, 4.0i 6-cyl auto, and only _just_ lost taking the car up to 80km/h.

Seems to use up a lot of fuel, but this may change when I replace the injectors.

I plan to mod this car in the near future. Planning an engine bore, extractors, 2 1/4in. exhaust, bosch injectors, and a racing chip.

It is very hard to find performance specs on this car, and anyone with specific information pretaining to a Toyota Corona Avante 2.4i 5-spd Manual, please contact me on msaundersREMOVE@austarnet.com.au (just remove the "REMOVE" part from the e-mail address, I hate spam).

If you are looking to buy a first car with limited money, this would be a perfect choice, I paid only $1100 for mine ;)

My 80's motor magazine tells me that the 2.4 4cyl that you have does 10.8sec 0-100kmh. with a 5 speed gearbox.

I have a 2.4 wagon auto. I have found that incorrect ignition timing gives bad economy and poor performance when the A/c is used. When correct it gives about 11litres per 100 kms economy around town regardless of A/C or not and only a little drop in performance when A/C is used. On long distance I have had 8.5litres per 100 kms which is fine for the size of the motor/Auto etc.

I have a 1986 Toyota Corona Avanti 2.4efi 5speed manual with IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) and it has never let me down. It's won every drag race I have had. It's great on fuel.

I have put on a pod and extractors, with a large hotdog and a 2 1/4" exhaust pipe to the 4 inch cannon muffler. I did have the computer upgraded and it runs a lot better. I put in larger injectors, and I also got larger 4 discs for the brakes and callipers for better braking. I put in platinum 4 point spark plugs to burn the fuel better.
