1992 Mazda 929 from North America - Comments

"Luxury trash can"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

When I got it, all four struts were bad. had to change them all, about $200 each for original Mazda parts. but still after I changed them, it still rides terrible.

Had problem with engine performance, kept on hesitating. fixing it is expensive so I didn't bother.

I then had problems with idle rpm, when its cold, engine rpm goes up to 3000 and fluctuates rapidly. which is very frustrating and annoying.

Decent acceleration from 0-60 about 8 seconds for a big car like this one, but I can still beat a 1996 Chevy blazer LT. (sorry dude, I had to put it)

Top speed is bad, I don't think it could go to 115 mph.

It's a gas guzzler, about 13 mpg,

General comments?

It looks really nice though, it turns heads, but I wouldn't advise any body to get one.

I have the exact same problem when starting my car on very cold days - RPM goes up to 3000 and fluctuates. Have you gotten yours fixed?

Your distributor is fuctuating because the dist. cap is bad or not the proper cap. Let me tell you, I went thru this problem with my 929. You have to use a bosch/ngk cap. aNYTHING ELSE WILL WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS. DONT ASK ME WHY, I Don't KNOW.

I bought my 929 new in '92 and still have it with 96,000 miles. The ONLY problems I have ever had was a period when the engine idle would not go below 3000 rpm when coming to a stop. One can of Motor-up fixed it. Never had the problem again. This year, 2006 I had my second problem. The fan clutch went out and I had to replace the fan.

Other than that I LOVE this car. BTW it WILL do the 140 mph that the speedometer says... I have done it on a deserted highway.

If they had continued to make these cars I would be buying them still.

I also Don't recommend any body to speed in this car. It is sooo heavy and has poor handling that it is a recipe for disaster.

For all you second hand Mazda 929 owners it seems OK; rides like butter, but the car was an absolute failure in my mind. The cost for a new one was around 45000 bucks, and it hasn't held its value.

Any parts are extremely expensive; for most you need to go right to the dealer.

It should be faster for the price; more power.

It's really a lot like a Honda Accord, except the repair bill is triple, and there are a lot more hangy dankly little parts to mess up on it.

I bought mine in '98 for about $9500 second hand and it worked great until about two years ago. I was on the road and it started idling up and down. Don't know if it's a vacuum or my dist cap. I looked at the cap and it's kinda worn down. I've worked a little on this engine doing what maintenance I could, but the parts are too expensive. I can't stand such complicated engines. I figured I would have to touch it and it would behave. Luckily it did. The reason I wouldn't recommend is because it's discontinued and it's a gas guzzler. I get about 13 mpg too. No matter how easy I go on it for better mileage, it's does the same. Extremely heavy car.
