Nothing major to report so far; just regular oil changes every 3,000 miles.
No matter how much I drive it, it never lets me down. It is every bit as reliable as my old 300SD.
This car is very fast, too. It goes like a big gas V8 while returning a fuel range of 25-32 miles per gallon all year round!
As long as you keep your diesel exercised and maintained properly, they will run forever!
* Nothing beats a W126 Mercedes S-Class for quality; not a W220, nor even a W140 (I know, I've driven them both).
I'm the owner of a 91 350SDL and an 87 300SDL. Had the 91 since 2004 and got the 300 in Jan 2005. Both are exceptional automobiles. They both had COMPLETE sets of manuals and maintenance records, which is essential to look over BEFORE the decision of buying. I was coached/advised on what to look for in these cars prior to purchase by a lifelong friend who owns 3 Mercedes and also an associate in Colorado who owns 2 Mercedes as well. Both said if the records are not with the car, then "Don't walk, Run. The friend with three said the more you drive them, the more you will like these older Mercedes. True! I've taken both over a maintenance pit of a friends and just keep getting amazed at the quality of design and craftsmanship. Took the 300 to a certified dealer in Wichita and got along fine with everything there from start to finish. Cost was not unreasonable and when I got a tour of the shop, everyone was busy working instead of visiting like many shops that I've been to with my Fords, Chevy, Olds, Buick and Dodge vehicles (I've got 6 4X4s that I use in my ranching business), so am quite familiar with maintenance and buying parts of all kinds. Am looking forward to putting at least 300,000 miles on each of these cars.
300SDL 1987 I couldn't agree more- fast, reliable, HANDSOME,
and 34.4 mpg consistently, (highway, using Mobil One in all drive-train components). All that at 318,000 miles. My mechanic classifies it as one of the last "hand-built" Mercedes. Amen to that.
