Numerous problems. Car started stalling without warning at the 1,000-mile mark. To date, we still have this problem. Our head gasket and heads were replaced at the 14,500-mile mark. They were still unable to prevent the oil and coolant from mixing, so they replaced the entire engine. We have less than 1,000 miles on this new engine, and it has been in the shop registering a fault code of 1. The fault code is a fuel injector not firing properly. Since the 1,000-mile mark our idle and shifting have been rough. The heater stopped working at the 14,500-mile mark. This led to them finding that the oil and coolant were mixing. The speedometer will often start reading sporadic readings. We drove for 15-miles on our toll road and we could not tell how fast we were going the entire trip. The speed was going from 30 to 60 to 40 to 70 etc. Like I said before, we are still having the same problem even after the new engine was put in.
The Lemon Law states that your car is a lemon if it has been to the shop 4 or more times or if it has been out of service for more than 30 days. To date, our car has been to the shop 10 times and has been out of service for about 50 days. We tried to work with Daimler to get a replacement vehicle, even asked if we could just get a used car valued at what our Liberty was now worth, but they refused to help. Their company no longer has an arbitration process, so you are forced to retain a lawyer. We have owned Jeeps in the past and we were die-hard Jeep and Dodge owners. After the way they have handled our Liberty problems, we will never buy another Daimler Chrysler product again. We understand that there will be problems with a first model year car, but it should be replaced when it is obviously a lemon. Daimler refused to work with us and all of the employees we have talked to from Daimler were extremely rude and unwilling to help in any way. I have e-mails from 5 other people across the country that is having the same stalling problems we are having. The Liberty has serious flaws and I wish someone would take the time to investigate them. We loved our Liberty dearly when we first bought it, but we are now afraid to drive to the store less than a mile away. That tends to happen after your car stalls on the highway during rush hour. We have told Daimler that the car is a safety hazard, but the district manager told us to drive it for another few weeks to see if it stalls again. We have gone through this routine for a year now and they are still singing the same tune. Stay away from the Liberty.
I feel your pain - although my pain was with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I did retain a lawyer on a contingency - and ended up with a few grand as the final outcome. Have you talked to a lawyer? Mine specilaized in lemon, and had a realtionship with Daimler.
I thought I was the only one having problems with the Liberty (Called a Cherokee here in Australia). My car has been in for fixes and every time came back with something else broken.
I had one of the computers replaced. The one controling the speedometer cluster, lights and rear hatch windows opener. I had to wait 2 weeks for a replacement part to arrive.
The drivers seat base motor unit were replaced after it stopped going forward and backward. Again I waited for a part. When I got the car back for this fix the reclining action wasn't working and needed workshop attention again.
The air-con condensation leaked into the car and a non-standard modification had to be installed to correct this.
Since day 1 the air vents couldn't close properly and caused a wheezing noise at 100 km/h. Aggravated when a window in the car was opened. The dealer took a week to locate the problem and in the end just resealed the windscreen and all holes in the firewall with silicone. The noise is gone at least...
All this and the car has only done 25000km. All was also fixed at no charge.
The only thing I paid to have fixed was new front disk pads at 10000km which also required the disks to be re-machined to get rid of deep grooves.
I have a jeep liberty 2002 sport. I have had 4 batteries replaced. This problem started after 3 days of ownership.
At around 26,000 miles, my early 2002 Liberty starting making a clunking sound as it downshifts when coming to a stop or corner. The dealer checked with the manufacturer support and was told that this is an inherent transmission problem in the first ones produced.
This is completely unacceptable to me so I called Daimler-Chrysler customer service where I was informed via various calls and rude representatives that there was nothing they could do, the car ran and shifted, and that was the end of their obligation. I will be notified if there's ever a fix.
Where do I go now? It is still under warranty. Any ideas?
I made an appointment with the dealer today for the same clunking-rear-end problem in my 2002 Liberty Renegade. Do you have any sources where I can find more info on this problem? Thanks in advance... Sean _shadowplay@yahoo.com.
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty. It has 38,000 miles and the trans went out. My warranty expired on at 36,000 so far they are putting in a new Valve Body at the tune of 1400.00. Out of warranty so I Have to pay... If that doesn't work I have to pay an additional 2,800.00 to get the transmission rebuilt. Of course no help from chrysler... Can anyone offer any help?
I have had my 2002 Liberty Limited Edition for 5 months and from the beginning when I first start it, there is a lound ticking noise. The dealership explained that since it was sitting outside at -20 C and "cold started" that it was the fuel injectors making the racket and that it would go away. The noise did go away, but here it is May and still on first start, there is the ticking noise. The dealership explains "Oh, it's the 3.7 engine that is notorious for that". Anyone else???

I am happy to know that I am not alone with my problems with my Liberty. At 35,000 miles the engine started making a horrible clicking noise. I had it towed to the dealership and they told me they would need to replace cylinder 4 of my engine. The dealership kept my vehicle for 5 days. Upon returning the vehicle to me I drove my Liberty one mile down the road for a routine oil change where the attendant would not perform the service because the car was making a clicking sound and the engine was severely shaking causing the car to struggle to drive. An hour after having service done at my dealership my poor little Liberty was once again on a tow truck back to the dealer. They are now replacing cylinder 6. It is completely unacceptable that my Liberty was ever released back to me to only have to go back in for the very same problem on another cylinder.
I have filed a complaint with Chrysler and we are exploring options for a dealer trade.
I am doing some research on jeeps, neighbor has a liberty and it "Looks" good. I have a 99 outback #4 since 90 and very disappointed in the 99. I think you should file a complaint with the better business bureau

2002 Jeep Liberty 59,000 miles engine seized. I bought the extended 8 years 80,000 miles, but they will not cover it. Stating poor maintenance. Sludge in the oil. We did our oil changes regularly, but do not have receipts for proof so we are at their Mercy. Then dealership tells us $7,000 to build new engine and of course I can't afford that so it sits in my driveway still making payments. When I do get the money to fix it I will not take it to a dealer. They are too expensive, but again they have me at their mercy because if someone else does the work then the warranty is voided all together. What good is an extended contract?

I have been trying to get the dealer to fix some of the problems I am having with my Jeep Liberty 2004.One good thing has happened, dealer found A/C problem is the compressor, waiting on part now.I hope they can solve the skipping, jerking, and hestiating problem next.Anybody got any suggestions?
I am an attorney in Brooklyn representing a client against Daimler-Chrysler. My client owns a 2002 Jeep Liberty and had sludge develop in the engine causing failure and a replacement. They did their oil changes and have receipts for them. They are being told that it is not covered due to "improper maintenance" and perhaps low grade oil being used. This happened at about 60K miles. They district manager and all others do not want to honor the warranty. Are there any other stories/incidents similar?
My 2002 Jeep Liberty is in the shop right now. They say it is cylinder #3. They are replacing all the value springs.
It has been in the shop for 2 1/2 weeks. It has 53,000 miles. I do have the extended warranty. Lets see what happens.
My 2002 Jeep Liberty is on it's 3rd battery.
It had the clunking noise when I went around the corner. After many trips to the dealership they finally fixed it.
Now it is in the shop for a bad cylinder.

Everything I have read above in the first gentlemens artilce about the replaced engine, speedometer moving around, etc has happened to me. I took the car in for the 3rd time yesterday... I will be contacting a lawyer. this is great to find the same things wrong with my jeep as you, I felt like I was going crazy. get a lawyer, there is a lemon law. I will share what happens with the lawyer. You don't need me to repeat what you already read above me.
