When I got it I had to put on new front brake pads and rotors.
I tuned up the engine- plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, oil change, air filter, etc.
I had to put a new gas tank in at around 175,000.
I blew up the rear-end about 3 months ago, I pulled the junk 8.8 out and got a 9 inch out of a Lincoln Continental and put 4.11 gears and a posi in it. I am waiting for the driveshaft to come back from the shop.
I am putting a built 460 in it and a built c-6 tranny in it. can't wait!
That's about it, it's been a great car.
The bench seats are the best I have ever sat in, you just sink down in them.
The handling is a little sluggish, but that is typical for boats like this.
The car weighs 5500 lbs. I get 11 mpg.
I have not put the new, bigger motor in it yet.
That's it.
With the 460 you will get worse gas mileage than you do now.
I owned a '73 Galaxie myself. I bought it from the original owners in 1989 with 59,000 miles on it. It was a light metallic blue with dark blue vinyl top and interior. It was the two door hardtop model with a 460 cu in engine. Sorry I had to sell her due to a bad oil leak she developed at around 102,000 miles. If I would have had the money at the time I would have kept the car as I had already had it repainted. The interior was in mint condition as was the vinyl top. I hope you still own yours as they are a great car, I sold mine 12 years ago and still miss it.
I had a 1973 Lincoln M IV with a 460, the engine was tired and I still got 13 to 15 mpg depending on where I was going... even better on the freeway.
Ride on.
I'm not sure where everyone is getting a 1973 Ford Galaxie from, they quit making them in 1972.
Not true: Galaxie stayed around through the 1974 model year as the low-line full size Ford.
Little known fact: Ford actually revived the "Custom 500" nameplate in 1975 as the bare-bones model of the full size Ford that was restyled for that year, but it was only available as a fleet vehicle, intended as taxicabs and police cars, and only for that year, so is now impossible to find -- are there any left?
Actually, the fleet only Custom 500 was offered thru the 1977 model year. The next year was the last year for the old full size body style. Our local telephone company here in Wichita Falls had a fleet of them, as well plain vanilla 76 mavericks.
From September 1974 through March of 1975, the Ford LTD was provided in place of the Custom 500, as fleet vehicles, as the Custom 500 was not available until April of that year. We enjoyed the nicer seats, chrome and the "luxury" of the LTD's as the entire fleet was upgraded for an entire model year until the cheaper version came out. Same vehicle without all the velour seats and nice trim, full wheel covers, etc.
