1992 Proton Proton GLS from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Good family saloon"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The radiator leaks, and has done since I owned the car, but I plugged it with barr's radiator seal.

The gaskets are creating too much pressure, resulting in the radiator hose blowing at 125000 miles.

Sunroof leaks.

Driver's side window won't go down.

Passenger side window will go down, but falls off the tracking.

Doesn't like going into first gear.

General comments?

Although I have a rather large list of faults for my Proton, I bought it because family members have owned the same model, and never had any problems.

Personally I found it very average to drive, with poor acceleration, but good power from 15-60mph.

The interior is nothing special, and the seats are comfortable. There is plenty of room inside the car, but head room is lacking, and that's coming from someone who is 5'9.

The car handles reasonable well, but shifts its weight poorly in corners.

It's unleaded.

Does 100 miles for 13.35 liters.

Low tax group.

Group 8 insurance.

Not a bad review, had the same problems with my own proton.

The person who sold it to you was running it with no water in the radiator.

Well the same go, s for my proton, the sunroof leaks, the drivers side window won't go down, but as for the cornering its very good, mine is almost 13years old now and its ready for another mot, I'm going to keep it going untill I can afford a better one, from john in gwent uk.

Hi there I too have a Proton just got it today!! its on a K reg.

I have a Granada, but with the price of fuel here in the UK at a all time high I had to get a small car so I went for this proton OK first thoughts are.

Old dated interea (but clean) good pickup for a 1300cc.

This car has a very full service history from new and has only had 2 owners from 1992!! And has covered 83000 miles that's great and both have looked after it with no regards to cost.. Its in a red colour!! And the boot lid lacquer is pealing bad, but the car shows no signs of age and no RUST at all.. Looking back at the service history it was under waxed 3/4 years ago.

What sort of MPG can I expect to get round town / M way any one know..

Is there a Proton web site for older ones like this one..

Regards

Colin.

My 1991 Proton 1.5 GLS Aeroback has been in our family from new as I inherited it 4 years ago from my Mum who bought a Mercedes. The car has been converted to LPG and has now clocked 146,000. It has a few minor problems with a leaky sunroof and corroded window mechanisms, otherwise it is fine with very good bodywork. I drove from Cornwall to Worcester last week and it cost less than £30 return. They are great reliable cars with absolutely no image or street cred! The only things I have replaced are the clutch and the gearbox (from a scrappy). Provided you service them they will go on forever. I am hoping for another 50,000 miles out of mine!

I was given my Proton GLS K reg from my sister. As she has run 3 cars into the ground, I didn't expect it to last me. I got a mechanic to look at the engine for me. New thermostat, new slave cylinder which sorted the clutch out as the gears were slipping, not a problem now. Also need a radiator which I will be going to a scrappy for. The car is running sweet as a nut now. I highly recommend this car.

We have had our torpedo as we know it for 5 years and its still going strong. Yes the sunroof leaks and nobody is going to nick it as it has no street cred, but its done two return journeys from Plymouth to Bristol every week for the last two years without a problem. It flew through its last MOT after salvaging a new bonnet from a scrappy (doner car had 240000 miles on the clock!!!) We have just clocked 111K miles and promised it to our 7 year old daughter as her first car much to her annoyance.

Hi; my Proton is a k reg and has done 50000 miles genuine; it has not given me many problems; it has had a new clutch, distributor, rubber boot and a few other small things, but like some other commentors the sun roof leaks; the windows don't work or jam. From Ian.

I have had mine for 5 years now. She is a bit rough looking now, but these cars are faultless. It's got to be the Mitsubishi engines in them. They put some modern cars to shame. The best £300 I have ever spent on an old car so far.

I have had a Proton for 17 yrs (110 000) I have not looked after it. Only failed its MOT this year for first time on windscreen wipers!!! I love the old banger. Sorry to say my daughter cannot say the same -- just bought herself a brand new Gen 2 and had nothing but trouble since the day it was bought and poor follow-up (if any) of the powers that be!They not interested. So disappointed and angry as this has spoiled what should have been a lovely time for her. A lot of money too.
