I have replaced the transmission and still am having problems with the transmission after only driving it one year with the new transmission.
I feel that all 1993 DodgeIntrepids should be recalled for the transmissions and fixed at no cost to the owners as there are too many 1993 Intrepids with bad transmissions for it to be caused by the owner.
The 1993 Dodge Intrepids are garbage. I have had the transmission replaced twice and its acting up again only after 9 months of use. I will not put a third transmission in it, I will junk it.. The glove box will not open. I am having trouble with it starting now, it turns over, but takes a long time to crank like its gettin no gas..
Agreed, A Piece of Garbage. The transmission has been replaced 3 times since the car was bought from the dealership in late 1993 and its about due for another one. I have a friend who worked at Firestone and told me how they like to make jokes about how Dodge Transmissions should be put in with Velcro.
Actually it's probably not the Intrepid's transmission, but who diagnosis' it. The car has TCC sensors and if one goes bad the tranny can slip. I've read serveral reviews here and many of the complaints about this car (shutting down etc.) are probably due to the advanced technology use in it. The PCM (computer) senses a lot of things and acts accordingly. The sensors used were 1st generation. Knowing the proper diagnosis precedure is everything. Don't fault the car for being ahead of it's time. Get a better mechanic and replace the simple sensors.
6/2007.
Whoever criticizes this car it's transmission must have had a lemon in the bunch. Yeah, my intrepid had a it's transmission die. I took it to the transmission shop and they found 3 slips on three gears. Apparently, I drove this car across the country twice. I drove it hard in the traffic jams of New York and Florida. The car suddenly went into first gear after not driving it for a month. The transmission guy changed the fluid and told me the transmission had a few weeks left in it. The tranmission had a grinding noise. As soon as I gave it new transmission fluid it gradually went away. I also bought a bottle of Lucas transmission fix. The car glides like it is new.
Sure it can cause some stress. Just apply the self mechanic know how and some TLC and it will be a prized classic. I think they made a mistake to turn it more bubbly. It is proven to be stable. A fix on this car has proven to be a solution without a misdiagnosis. Watch your mechanic and take care of it. It takes a little money to up keep it, but it will repay in it's performance many times over. I will agree that if you own one of the intrepids with less extras, then junk it. My car has just about every luxury feature for that year and model. It has borrowed a few parts from the 97 junked cars for aestetic purposes.
This car is the king of the road. If you are not loaded and want to experience a quality ride, this will be your answer. The unfortunate thing about this car is when you go to a junk yard to get parts, the owners of these places don't think they will find a person like me who needs a headlight assembly or a button the air conditioner. They destroy them so quick that when I return to take more parts out of the junked car, it is already smashed.
The cruise control in this car makes you feel that you are on a plane ride. I think my car has a mind of it's own. It just keeps working well. Always feed it quality maintenance fluids at it's due time.
This is to me a new car with calendar date indicating that it is old.
This is a good car. You have to take care of it to continue the experience. It has proven the test of time. A lot of cars tend to lose their appeal. This car brings out confidence on the road.
If you trust the seller, buy it used.
