Head gasket blew twice.
Transmission replaced twice.
Crankshaft replaced three times.
Drivetrain replaced once.
Steering column fitted twice.
Alternator replaced five times.
Engine overheated four times.
Brake disc pads replaced six times.
All times I took the the car to the dealer they did poor services and collected a very expensive price for it.
I take my car to be fixed only at independent garages.
Worst car I have ever driven.
The engine doesn't have enough power to push the car with agility.
The handling is terrible, a car with very poor stability.
The brakes don't have enough power to stop the car.
The styling is ugly.
The cabin is uncomfortable, especially in the rear seats.
The size of the boot is not large enough and became limited with the GNV cylinder.
In general, an unsafe and not pleasurable car to drive.
Man you had a bad luck when purchased the car, it is one of the best cars ever made...
Well, after all you said about this car, I think all the folks around want to know the reason that make you buy it. Yes, because you criticized not only mechanical failures, but also styling, handling and performance. I think you should really drive a car before you buy. That's the main reason that I rate your review as poor. Otherwise, I owned four Opala, and the only problem I ever had was that I needed to rebuild the engine, in two of these cars, just because they had too much kilometers (more than 400.000, or 250.000 miles). I also owned other cars (Fords, VW's, Fiats, Dodges, etc.), and I must say that GM Opala is one of the most reliable car ever produced I'm Brazil. Nowadays, I drive a Diplomata 1987 151 CID and a Brazilian Galaxie, 1971, with the 292 CID V8 "Yblock".
