I have 1994 Cadillac DeVille and yes there are a few problems with the car, but it has been a good car for me I think you might need to take it a little easier it sounds like you expect everything to hold up forever.
I thinks the guy before me is right too. I have a caddy deville and it runs just fine and all those things you mention are all minor problems. the car is 10 years old!!! its not going to last forever especially if you don't take care of it.
Personally, I don't know if you're expecting too much, or not. I was just curious to see how others fared with this model, as I purchased one as a lease-return with only 48000 miles on it in 1999, and by 56000 miles was ready to throw a can of gasoline and a match into it. While it was stunning to look at, it let me down FAR too often, and I had just about HAD it with the security key thing burning itself out. I traded it at a HEFTY loss, and vowed never to buy another one.
I bought my '94 Concours in late summer of 2003. It has about 64K on the OD. I replaced the battery (naturally), and had to replace an air conditioner hose and recharge ($$). The car was missing badly, especially at idle or low RPM. The dealer thought (and I agreed) the it needed an injector cleaning, which we did. It got much better, but still misses a little. I'm taking it back in. Also, the air conditioner must still leak as the "low refrigerant" is flashing on the dash. I have parked the car over the past winters as I live in northern Minnesota (read car-dissolving road salt). For an 11-year old car it is in great shape, IF I can get this engine thing figured out. Considering my other car is an '89 Camry, I'm a happy guy!
I bought my 1994 Concours in 2002, it had been a hi way car most of it's life so it had 300kms on the odometer.
It has 370kms showing now, that's over 200,000 miles without a problem.
I knew through research prior to purchase that the North star 4.6 had some reports of head gasket failures, I'm dealing with that problem at present, getting to the point the car
has been strong, reliable, comfortable, and safe, bang for the buck has been over and above the call.
As luck would have it, I build engines for a living so the head gasket replacement will
cost parts only, about $485.00 Canadian including new head bolts, recommended.
After careful examination of gaps, end plays, and ware tolerances, I found very little ware.
I don't know if this is luck or the fact the engine had regular oil changes and ran only widely unrecommended synthetic oil rather than a petroleum based oil.
I changed the standard items, rings, bearings and very few gaskets, most of the gaskets if undamaged, nicks scrapes etc.
Are reusable, according to General Motors.
Aside from all the BLAH, BLAH, BLAH I saw impressive high tech throughout the entire engine design.
I'm proud to own this technological marvel, and looking forward to another 200,000.
"Plastic molding on drivers side seat where heater and recline controls are located has come loose."
That is indeed a design flaw. I'm a small guy, about 135 pounds, and I managed to knock mine loose just by getting in and out of the car. My Mother has a 1996 Deville and hasn't had the same problem.
That said, how the hell do you break a sunshield? I've had four straight cars with cour consecutive sunshields and have never broken one.
