"Great for a Mr. fixit"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

One thing broke after another:

Tranny sprung leak, blew up:$1,500

clutch and pilot bearing: $375

Auto locking hub: $300

Drive shaft:$400~why I finally sold the damn thing, way too many countless little things to go wrong with it. To much regular maintenance making it to expensive to drive.

General comments?

Look for leaks regularly!!! I can't stress that enough for you.

OK I kind of wonder why the clutch and drive-shaft went out on it. Maybe your driving skills have to do with the matter, especially since your driving a manual and that stuff went out. Its probably operator problems. Every clutch needs to be replaced on most cars, especially when you drive it rough. Think about it.

Um, Yah I would have to agree with the first comment. IF the transmission, cluthc, and driveshaft all went out. It sounds to me like operator error because I come from a family of mechanics and ford makes a good solid vehicle unless you tear it up which that is what it sounds like to me. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I had a 1992 Explorer; it was a piece of junk. With regular servicing, the transmission went out at 89k ($1900). I had the wheel bearings repacked 3 times and replaced once all in one year's time. The thing drinks way too much gas and the car has a slight shake when driving around 60-65 mph!!! Only good thing is that the engine is pretty strong, but the acceleration is very poor. Would not buy another one!!!

I just purchased a 1991 Explorer Sport with 62,000 miles. The Exterior and Interior are MINT. There is a slight clicking sound when the 4 w/d is engaged. I have had previous 4 w/d to know it's a bearing or C/V assembly. The Tranny has been replaced along with the tires on recall. I think for the $1,000.00 I just spent it's well worth it. Could anyone give me information on any defects they are aware of, regarding this year and model vehicle.

Hello, I just thought that I would put my input into the fact that everyone thinks that a Ford Explorer 1992 is a piece of junk. I've been driving a 1992 Ford Explorer for a couple of years now and a few things went wrong like the tyranny going out, but that was after 146,000 miles. The auto locking hub went out, but that was because of the driving styles I have. I replaced the hub for $100 and everything works now. The inside and outside are in perfect shape, and the acceleration is pretty good saying you can burnout by accelerating. Just thought I'd share this with you all.

I agree. The Explorer does do very good burnouts from a standstill... that is quite a shock, considering the weight of the vehicle overall.

I love my 1992 Ford Explorer. Even after having the tranny and clutch replaced, the wheel bearings packed, and repaired after a wreck, it's still rolling with 236+K miles on the odometer. There are a few quirks to work out and I don't drive it as much as I used to, but it has been an awesome vehicle for me. It was truly built Ford tough.

Being a poor, helpless college student, I needed a vehicle that I could depend on that would not cost me a fortune in repairs. My mom gave me our family 1992 Ford Explorer. We purchased this car when I was a mere fourth grader. It has always been very dependable and cost efficient considering it is an SUV. I learned how to drive in this vehicle and had always felt safe in it. She just made it to 100k and I sold her because I bought a new Ford Escape. Ford trucks are probably the highest quality you can find, especially since they are American made.

I drive a 1992 Ford Explorer XL 2WD with over 225K miles on it. It is a great SUV so far. My father owned it when it was NEW in 1992 and has taken good care of it. I have replaced the tranny back at 180K, clutch has been changed a few times (normal wear and tear), both head gaskets were changed at 200K due to a coolant leak, new A/C compressor and alternator at 200K. I just got the front wheel bearings replaced and installed some fresh Bilstein shocks front/rear. Truck runs great and I don't really have any complaints, except that the cab noise has gotten louder over the years. Plan to keep this car for a while. This Ford must have been built on a Wednesday :)

I just purchased a one owner '92 Explorer 4 door 5 speed with 268,000 km (200,000 miles), and think it is probably the best $750 CDN (or $600 US) that I could have spent. Although there are a couple of body holes forward of the rear wheels, it runs very well and should give me the reliable winter commuting vehicle I need.

Can anyone suggest things to watch for, so I don't get into mechanical trouble by missing warning signs?

All these ford supporters are sooo funny, they say only had a few minor problems like the tranny failed at 100k miles or whatever, that's not a minor problem, tranny's shouldn't die that fast. my friends 1992 ford explorer died at 100k kms, thats like 62k miles. ya built for tough alrite, maybe all you ford lovers need to wake up and realize how bad those cars/trucks are.

In response to ^ above, the A4LD is known to be a weak link in these vehicles, as well as Bronco IIs and Rangers, and more often than not they fail by 120,000 miles. Otherwise, the vehicle is well built, reasonably dependable, and fairly powerful. My father has owned a '92 XLT since new and I recently purchased a '94 XLT with 113,000 miles.

I have a 1992 Ford Explorer, we've had it about 3 years, we've had a new tranny put in and the bushings needed to be replaced, but it has over 200K miles on it and I think it's done pretty well. It now has a gas leak and we are preparing to donate it to Charity, it's had a long full life and it's time to retire, but to get over $200K miles on a car is not to shabby.
