Thought I was reading the story of my 1997 Mercury Mistake! Only thing different is that my clock and door handle are still working. That is just about the ONLY difference! Can't believe your drivers headrest is broke too. Shame on Ford for this car!!
Deja vu! We bought a used 1995 Mercury Mystique for our son last August. It had 110,000 miles on it. It had a broken headrest, too, but we found one at a salvage yard. The thermostat always runs hot, and the clock doesn't work. In December, we had to have the timing belt and tensioner fixed. Earlier this month, the springs and struts needed to be replaced. A week later, the car died--it's the timing belt and tensioner again! While I love my Mercury Villager, my husband keeps pointing out that it was really made by Nissan. This will be our last Ford or Mercury product.
I own a 95 Mercury Mystique that I like a lot, I bought it new, now it only has 45k miles on it. I have to say I have had some of the same bad experiences though. The trunk was worked on numerous times because every time I opened it, water poured into the trunk, I live in Western Washington so this is not acceptable. The back doors squeak like crazy when opened, and the doors did freeze shut when I lived in a colder climate one winter. Also, I had a horrible problem with the gas lid lever not working, when the car was 3 days old, and when I pulled on the latch in the trunk, it broke off... they worked on it for 3 years before they got that fixed, it -usually- works now.
It makes funny noises when you shift into 2nd gear, always did from day one, the front wheel drive is noisy, and the air vents are falling apart. Also, could really have used a tilt steering wheel, which was not available that year. Back seat is crowded, but I don't plan on sitting back there. I'm 6'1'', so to me the front seat is a bit crowded. One of the plastic covers that latches the rear seats in place broke off immediately, but it still works.
I bought my mystique 1995 new and have had much the same problems with some variations. I did not worry too much while everything was being fixed under warranty. But when the warranty run out it started to hurt my pocket. All in all compared to other new cars I have had, I didn't think its repair record was any worst. Perhaps what have struck me the most is to learn that Ford dealers knew nothing about the car and how to fix things, they were constantly contacting Ford to find out. The second bad thing that has disappointed me deeply about this car and Ford is that now I need to replace my ABS and Traction Control gadget and Ford charges $5,000 for a new one. This 8 year old car with 106,000 miles is not worth even that. Some ripoff!
No more Ford products for me.
Reading your comments is almost feels like you guys are driving my 1998 Mercury Mistake. Head gasket blew right after I drained my account to pay for the transmission replacement. When I was in the shop the last time, I was advised about the condition of my front wheel bearings. Cigarette lighter and clock have never worked and I had to apply grease to the hinges on the rear doors to put an end to the metal-on-metal grinding.
I have called Mercury several times to find out whether any of my issues are on recall notice, and as always they are not. This company has to know about the level of dissatisfaction that these cars are producing, but I feel that they simply do not care. When you boil it down, no one can make such a terribly constructed car and not know about it.
Wow I'm glad I'm not the only mystique owner with a broken headrest, watter comming out of the trunk, broken speedometer and broke two wheel studs. do NOT buy this car.
I've got the broken Headrests, broken passenger side lock, broken gas cap release, my car lighter doesn't work... and it wasn't the fuse or the element, clock lights flicker, two broken cranks to wind up the windows, broken in cabin vents, cup holder isn't broken, but it might as well be...
And in the past 2 years I've spent over 3k fixing engine related problems and have been hoping to god it was going to last me for a little while longer, but the transmission just died today so I think its over.
It's been quite a learning experience because I really didn't know much about cars getting into this junker and I feel like I'm coming out with quite a lot of knowledge because as everything went wrong I learned what it was.
Never by ford unless you like to see your mechanic laugh every time you walk in the door.
Mercury Mistake.
I have a 95 mercury mistake and I have had no problems till I got 140000 miles on it then the back brakes, brake lines, timing belt and fuel filter all went at the same time. I wouldn't buy another ford in my life time.
Well like the the old saying goes FORD "Found On Road DEAD"I paid $2600 for a 95 great looking car sitting on jack stands in the driveway. It has been sitting there for 3 weeks it broke down 3 days after purchase. All new battery, Starter and altenator. Have no clue what to replace next.
Wow, I’m not alone. I bought my 1995 Mistake (GS 4Cyl 16V Automatic) in ‘96 with 12k miles. It ran like a charm for the first year. Then here is my list of expensive repairs:
· Timing Belt @ 48k miles
· Power windows controllers on all four doors were shot @ 55k miles
· Thermostat
· Oxygen Sensor
· Alternator & Master power fuse & Battery (related I presume)
· Belt
· Driver and passenger head rests broken @ 37k miles.
· Clock works
· Cassette squeaks, but still works
· Cup holders broken
· Trunk doesn’t pop open, so when using the latch somebody has to lift it up from the back while the latch is activated… Water leakage as well
The last of my Ford / Mercury products ever…
I am very sorry about all your comments, I bought a new mystique mercury in 2000 and it is the best car I have ever had, maybe all the problems of the people that call this luxury car the "mercury mistake" had all those problems because the bought used cars. this is a magnificent car without any problems, and girls like it.
To the previous poster:
What are you smoking that has you calling the Mercury Mystake a "Luxury car"? I owned a Ford Contour (Mystake's Ford Clone) and a BMW 3 series and let me tell you there is nothing Luxurious about the Crudtour/Mystake unless you count cheap platic as luxury.
But I agree with everyone else in here. NO MORE FORD PRODUCTS FOR ME!
NOW IT´S MY TURN.
To the previous poster:
First of all I am talking about a Mystique Mercury, not a Ford Contour, you say that it is a clone, but I do not agree with you because that is why they have different names no? I really do not care if you have a Bmw we are in a section of Mystique Mercury... a LUXURY CAR.
Gonna send you a pic of my luxury car, just send me ur e mail adress.
JUST THIS WORDS... MYSTIQUE MERCURY I LOVE U, THANK U FOR BEING AN EXPANDED CAR... GIRLS LIKE THOSE KIND OF CARS :)
AND I AM SMOKING MARLBORO BLUE NOT WHAT U ARE SMOKING.
Amazing! I purchased my '95 in 1997 while in Georgia with the best of hopes, but within that year it was in the shop for a blower replacement - twice! I certainly had some of the aforementioned problems as well over the next 4 years until yesterday.
I gave the car to mom in 2001 with 134000 highway miles, and now with only 4500 miles more the transmission crashed without warning. This car was in excellent condition, always dealer maintained, always serviced on time, and always OEM parts. I had the same transmission issues with a '01 Taurus. Were these cars engineered to fail or what?
I'm done with Ford, even if I won one I'd sell it before it could bite me.
I own a 1995 Mercury Mystique. Wow there is allot of negativity about this car. Now don't get me wrong, my headrest are broken my trunk leaks water, my back door are crazy loud when opening, my gas door has to have help opening. I have had to change the front axel's a couple times. But I only paid $2500.00 CND for this car in 2003. I have not had any major problems with it until just recently. My Timing belt broke, and my car died.
I have 220,000.KM on this car.
I know many people who have purchased a car for 10K and had it go down in a month. This car has lasted me 3 years and only left me to walk once (so far).
I am now going to get rid of my car, but to tell you the truth I am sad to see her go.
So even thought I will probably never buy another FORD again. I think this car was pretty good to me.
