Nearside driveshaft, rear dampers, throttle body replaced, new radiator needed.
Top car. Everytime I drive it I come home with a grin. Superb car, reliable for its age. Performance car bargain of the decade.
How to humiliate the BMW driver :
1) Pull up to him at the lights.
2) Look at his M3 replica body kit and wheels.
3) Clock the 318 badge on the back.
4) When lights change, let him get ahead.
5) Put your right foot down and off you go.
6) Hit second gear and pass him.
7) Look in mirrors to see angry bloke waving fist.
8) Laugh and continue on your way, satisfied in the knowledge that come the first bend he'll be history.
I couldnt agree more I've owned 205's for years, and every time I get in it I love it! its so much fun! handles like a dream until you take ur foot off the throttle mid bend!
I keep meaning to buy a newer faster more refined car, but they're just not as much fun. my mate always takes the piss out of me for having such an old car, but I'm the one laughing when I'm over taking him cos he can't go as fast as me! bmw drivers are not the ones who wave angry fists at you when you take them at the lights. i like taking the piss out off people in far more expencive cars it put the biggist grin on my face! I love it to bits even though it always goes wrong and costs me an arm and a leg. all the money I spent over the years I could of probably bought a far more expensive far quicker car, but I don't care! if you've owned you'll know what I mean!
Whatever a 205 GTI can do off the lights, you can multiply it by ten in the twisty bits. I remember Clarkson driving one around some Welsh mountain roads on Clarkson's Motorworld a few years ago, and saying that "NOTHING, not even a Ferrari or Lamborghini, would be quicker along here". It is a tricky little sod when you push it hard though. Unlike a modern car which will understeer wide as you broach the limit, the 205 tucks its nose into the apex and wags its tail. You can almost hear the car saying to you "Alright then smart**se, you got into this, get yourself out!" Different to a modern car which wouldn't let you get into it in the first place.
And it does all this without EBD, ESP, ASR and even ABS. This car proves that expensive acronyms are no match for brilliant basic handling, and a chassis developed by guys with a God gifted talent. I have yet to come up against a car that I couldn't lose on a B-road in my ageing (1988, 130,000 mile) 1.9 GTI, with the exception of a well driven Mitsubishi EVO 7. Considering the car had at least 3 times the power (it wasn't standard), electronically controlled four wheel drive, and a seriously talented driver behind the wheel, I wasn't too upset about it.
On the subject of the dreaded BMW driver, I have yet to come up against one of any description (M3 included) with someone behind the wheel who could actually do it justice. They're all bravado off the lights with traction control and the world's finest six-pot engines doing all the work for them, but show them a corner, where the driver actually starts to count, and the speeds drop to levels my gran would find dull. I followed a 54 registered M3 recently which was doing 140 down the straights, and emergency stops before every corner, and spending more time looking at me in his mirror (and doubtless wondering how it could be possible that his expensive car was being matched by a £750 French tin can) than where he was going. Typical!
Hi, totally agree, I had a 1.6Gti, recently, and was messing with a guy in a 928 Porsche!!! He had me on every straight, but come to the cornering, and I was all over him like a dose!!!
Unfortunateley I blew the head up the same day, so she went to the place we hate to mention (an Mi6 converter!!!) She was great, 1.6 GTi Roland Garros special edition. Miss her terribly, have just purchased a 205 1.9 Gentry today, which is basically a 1.9 GTi, with an auto box and pretty suspension. but with only 60,000 on the clock, and a full service history, the £900 price mark was to good to miss, so I am back in the 205 world and ready to take on Mr sports man!!! Come and have ago Mr porsche, M3, Saab 900 turbo (yes a 1.6 Gti will beat them too)
