1995 Ford Maverick GLX from UK and Ireland - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing except for wear and tear.

General comments?

Still feels good after 71,000 miles.

The LWB model offers 7 seat accomodation and is great for the school run. The Turbo Diesel engine is superb, picking up very well between 50 and 75 mph. Don't buy a 2.4 petrol though, they are rubbish.

I have the 2.4 with 130,000 kms on the clock so far.

I have travelled over some very rough terrain including semi desert, alps and and tropical northern areas (through water over 1 m deep) of Australia and I have never had problems with the power, although it needs to be driven in the right power range.

All round a great vehicle.

As a keen climber and family man, I have asked a lot from my 2.4i and as yet she has never let me down. I have owned her for just over one year and though I originally went for a 2.7 diesel because a friend owned one at that time, I have had no regrets as to my choice, and he, I believe has been quietly impressed.

Hi, the Maverick in this review is mine and my comments that 2.4 petrols weren't worth it compared to the diesel are based on two things.

1) a friend who has been in the motor trade advised that petrols are slow and thirsty and very difficult to sell on because people do look for a diesel in a big car like the Maverick.

2) another mechanic friend recommended the diesel for strength, ie if you are planning to keep the car for 10 years or more (i.e. see the car as a long term prospect) then the diesel is a much more robust unit. for proof of this, look at all the mid 80s diesel Daihatsu's etc that are still running!

Its not a personal thing against the petrol engine, its just what I've been told!

Also, as an update, the car has now done about 80k and it has had a burst seal which led to a tiny oil leak, and the electric aerial stopped working. finally, the electric windows are now VERY slow at going up and down.

Hi, I'm thinking about buying a Ford Maverick 2.7 TD GLX, 102,000 miles on a 1996 N reg plate - asking price of £2,995. It's in excellent condition inside & out.

Before I buy I would love to hear any comments about the vehicle. any frequent problems? Is it a gas guzzler? what's the ride/drive like? anything would help.

Thanks
