I read the other reviews, and saw that a few people had a problem with the car not starting every once in a while. This has happened to me a few times since I bought the car three years ago
I bought this car when it became apparent, after 280,000+ miles, that my 1984 Z28 wasn't going to make it through another winter. I couldn't afford another Z, I wanted another Camaro, but I was very disappointed with the power and the lawnmower sound of the V-6 engines in the newer Coupes. Then I came across this RS with an 8-cylinder 350--
When the car is running, I love it----it is almost the same car as my 84, which I also absolutely loved. Lots of power, handles great, nice ride
I can agree about the 70 being the toughest one of the bunch. They had very simple, but heavy duty powertrains with very little to break. Know someone who had one and those were his experiences.
I read your survey about what has gone wrong with your 1992 camaro. I was wondering though if you could tell me some more. I am a teenager with a 1992 camaro and at the moment I'm afraid to drive it. It has not started twice for me and then one day when my mom was driving it it just died. She was able to coast off of the road and get it started. My question to you is when your car wouldn't start and you had to get the ignition cylinder did the car just not do anything when you tried to turn it on or did or get something, but it wasn't enough to spark. When my car wouldn't start there was just nothing happening. Also, did getting the ignition cylinder solve your problem? If you could please write me back at perkybabe26@cox.net it would be of great help to me. Thank you for your time.
Hi, just thought I would give an update since I originally wrote this review.
The problems with the security system continue, even after I paid $500 for a new ignition cylinder in March 2003. What happens is that the car just doesn't seem to recognize that it is time to go.. NOTHING happens when I turn the key. No crank, no switch, etc. I've had it taken in twice since March (one time the dealer said he adjusted the park safety switch, another time I was told that the starter was bad... whoops there's another repair, $430.) The problem still exists, must be a short in there somewhere. I can get the car started if (a) I don't try too many times (remember, if the VATS system doesn't recognize your key, it shuts off power to EVERYTHING for 10 minutes!!), and/or (b) if I play with the automatic shifter by first shifting into "D" then jamming it (sometimes leaning on it) back into "P". Hopefully I'll never need to leave anywhere in a hurry.
Doesn't matter anyway, because NOW the car is at home pouting in the driveway, overheating problems this time and BLEW the heater core to smithereens. Dealer wants $1,000 to fix that. Nope, not this time, I said.
Instead I spent $15 to run an ad in the local paper and bought a book of bus passes, I'll be buying a used Honda and driving that until I can either (a) get married to a good Chevy mechanic and/or (b) find another 70 Coupe to replace the one that I NEVER should have sold!
I hung in there with it as long as I could. Too bad, sure is a real pretty car sitting there in my driveway...
I Just purchased a 1992 Chevy Camaro RS 25th anniversary edition, V6. I had it for four days, when it broke and I had to take it to the shop. I believe that something behind me went out. People I have asked have told me they think it's the drive line. And the head gaskets are leaking. I'm more concerned with the drive line or drive shaft or whatever they mean. I was driving when the acceleration just dropped and as it slowed down, it sounded like a 747 was landing. It ran and started, in fact, I drove it to the mechanic. I was just curious if you have had any problems with what I'm referring to. My email is DezmondJE@aol.com.
Well, it seems to me that these cars have been abused. I just bought back my 1992 Camaro I sold in 1996. It's had 2 other owners in the mean time. There 99950 miles on the car, and everything works perfectly. Now, granted, the car has been well-taken care of. But to bash the car and not the owners is a mistake. This car was my daily driver for the first 4 years, went through 2 other owners who obviously cared for it, and now it's back in my garage. I've owned 4 camaros, and 3 mustangs, and none have given me any problems. It's called routine maintenance. If you don't abuse the car, it shouldn't give too many problems. Remember, the car is 12 years old already, and if wearable items have been ignored, they will fail! Anyway, enjoy your car, it's the last year of the American made Camaros!
I've owned my Camaro since day one.I bought brand new shipped to WV from Cali it now has 151,239 on the odometer and great. the car has had it problems in the past. the timing chain was replaced @about 80,000.the alt maybe 3 times, window motors 1 time, fuel pump 10/01/04 and now waiting for the rear hatch motor to arrive. i also, have replaced the whole Frt. suspension except the a-frame bushings. i would like to replace the engine sometime in the near future, but, overall Grt. car rides like a tank /w the gas mileage a pinto. Orginal owner and proud of it 25th Anniv. Edition. krumb1@hotmail.com p.s. the interior needs some work Dr. seat and dash pad. driven daily.
Hi, I currently own a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS. Due to Hurricane Ivan I've had to put a claim into my insurance company because the shingles that hit the car messed up the paint. The insurance company wants to total my car because they say it costs more to paint it than it is worth.
In order to adjust my claim they have asked me to find prove that my car is selling for more than the NADA value.
If you have sold or purchased a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS in last few months please e-mail me and let me know, How much you sold it for/or paid for it? How many miles it has? Where you sold or purchased it?
My e-mail address is gringococolo@yahoo.com.
Any information would help me to get my claim adjusted. I really hate to see my car go to a junk yard. It's ridiculous that they want to total it. It only has 68,000 miles on it. We bought it brand new and have kept it like a baby.
You pay so much money for insurance and when you need them, they aren't there for you.
Thanks so much for all your help.
Miriam.
I also have 92 camaro RS with a 3.1L engine. I have the same problem with it starting. I turn the key and nothing. No clicking or anything. I can wait 10 minutes and the thing fires right up. The difference is is that I don't have a security system of any kind. It's just the plain Jane model. I am so desperate for some help. kosbo77@yahoo.com.
Hello!! My husband bought a '92 Camaro RS last year, and he has changed the fuel pump twice. He has changed the fuel filter and everything else that has to do with the fuel. Every time he is driving and he arrives at a stop sign or red light, the car seems to want to stall. Turning the car on is not the problem, but it seems that it is not receiving enough gas or something. He is a do-it-yourself kind of guy, but he is not a mechanic. We are on a tight budget, and I was hoping one of you guys or gals could help out. Any suggestions or helpful tips would be very helpful. Thanks!!!
I own a 1992 Camaro RS with a V8. I had problems with the car not starting when it was about 4 years old. We replaced the starter 4x before (finally) a new service manager told me that when I bought the car there was a security system in it, and when I chose not to purchase the security system they put a bypass in. That time we completely removed the security system and I haven't had an issue yet. I did have to replace the fuel pump at about 70,000 miles, but my husband used to wait until the tank said empty before stopping at a gas station. The car now has 111,000 mostly (hard) city miles and still runs great. I love that car.
I am the original owner of a 92 camaro rs. I have not had any major problems to speak of. I have only had to replace the tires, exhaust, and clutch so far, and tune ups from time to time. I have read that a lot of you have had some major problems and my heart goes out to you, however, you can't blame the car, but should question the previous owner. MY car doesn't leak a drop of oil or overheat at all. The reason being I do not beat on my car. Lots of love to all you camaro owners.
I bought a 92 Camaro RS V6 with 210,000 miles on it. The engine runs great, but... had to get the freeze plugs fixed. When you do that you have to drop the trans. They are only 5 dollars a piece, but about $460 in labor. Now that I got that fixed my heater core went. It is almost like the antifreeze doesn't want to stay in the car. I have to heat the car up for about 15 minutes for it to run properly. I love the car to death, but I just can't relie on it. Its the little things that kill me. Just frustration! But what a car! I want a 69 maybe that'll be better.
"What a car". I guess you don't know anything about performance.
I own a 1992 rs 25th anniversary edition with a 3.1 v6 that has 158,000 miles on it. I have owned the car for almost 3 years now and have not had any problems with the car as of yet. Other than the regular maintance I haven't had any sort of problems other than a little oil leak. I love the car to death. I drive it hard from time to time and do not have any type problems. It handles great and is pretty quick to boot. I hope that everyone has a chance to get their camaros running right so they can enjoy them.
I own a 1992 camaro rs and WOW just WOW. Its only a V6 3.1L and I may be only 15 but I kow a good car when I drive one, and man is this one. I just love this car is always started for me and never lets me down. Maybe that's because I'm always keeping up with it. The only thing I need for it is the dash pad because I bought mine in South Carolina and of course its hot in SC so when the car sat it was sitting dead in the sun which caused it to have stress and get to cracks in it. But besides all that it's a FAST, FUN, WONDERFUL, WORTH EVERY PENYS WORTH to drive. I recomend it to anyone looking for an american muscle car.
