This isn't a bad truck, it's just not a great truck. It has typical 4wd abilities and actually looks kind of mean. The 3.2L V6 has pretty good pick up, but the 5 spd. trans. is very notchy. However, I was expecting a little more quality from an imported SUV like this. I only average 13 to 19 mpg's city/highway no matter how conservatively I drive. Recently my truck started using about a quart of oil every 2 weeks. Not good!
I'm also disappointed at the ride quality. The suspension thumps and bangs over bad roads like a lumber cart.
I feel bad for your experience, as obviously the original owner never took very good care of this Rodeo. I've had two Rodeo's, a 91 & 97, both V6's - still have the 97 w/108K on her now and she's a fantastic truck. Never had one single problem related to your situation with either truck.
The 91 had 140K when we traded her in for a 99 Chevy Silverado - only reason we did, is we needed a 3/4 ton truck to carry the camper, and the 91 V6 engine was a bit underpowered for pulling the 18' boat. The 97, 3.2L however, automatic, pulls the 4K boat like it's nothing - obviously not as well as the Chevy, but good enough for a V6 versus a big block V8.
It's too bad you had these experiences, most people with the original platform Rodeo's (91-97) worship the trucks, as they've provided unrealistic reliability through thick and thin.
Consumer Guide's website (cg-car-reviews.com) indicates that the Isuzu Rodeo is manufactured in the USA.
Yo! It's manufactured in Indiana... it is the TROOPER that is manufactured in Japan... by the way :D.
Hehe. Maybe that's why the Japanese-built Trooper gets almost universally good reviews, and the US-built Rodeo gets mixed reviews...
