Nothing has really gone wrong with this car as yet. All I have done is general servicing and balancing the twin 40's.
There is a small amount of play in the steering rack and a new one is quite expensive. I am having trouble finding a second hand one as most have power steering. Except mine!
The car is great fun to drive and handles as you would expect from Alfa. The 1800cc engine produces around 120bhp which is not too bad for a car of this age. Mind you, I used to have a V6 and that was quick!
I get around 35 mpg on a run, but that drops to around 26 - 28 on small and twisty roads. May have something to do with my driving though.
Considering the size and weight of the car, the acceleration is fairly good, but it really shines coming out of bends as you can get the power down earlier than some lesser cars due to the fantastic grip.
A brilliant car.
My father used to have a 1.8 like yours back in the 80's.
Fantastic engine, sound and typical rwd (=tail happy) handling... He did 40000 trouble-free kms, before passing it to another Alfa enthusiast. The day it was sold was one of the saddest days of my (petrol head) life, especially as the BMW 318 (E36) which succeeded it, had neither the sound nor the reliability (that's right- reliability) of the 75. Needless to say, we see it around every now and then, passing by and letting off that glorious soundtrack... Maybe one day I'll have it back, to join the 156 and 147 in the garage: just to go for a spin and recall what a car is all about.
Why would you not buy another car from Alfa Romeo?
