1997 Mazda 323 Astina (323F) from Australia and New Zealand - Comments

"Good looking, quick and fairly practical hatch"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing mechanical so far (owned 6 months), but drivers seat wearing around the side cushions

Bodywork has lot of paint chips and dents - New Zealand roads and drivers!

Knocking sound from underneath - source unknown.

General comments?

1.8 motor (used in MX5) puts out 92kW (122 bhp) and is fairly quick in smallish hatch.

Faster above 4000rpm, but OK around town

Handles well, but would benefit from lowered and stiffened suspension to reduce body roll

Smooth gearchange

Firm, but not harsh ride

Looks sexy, esp. in red with alloys

Enough space under bonnet for DIY maintenance

Interior a bit plasticky and gloomy - go for lighter colours / higher trim levels

Engine booms and vibrates below 2500 rpm - 2 litre V6 version is smoother.

Update to review: Car now up to 139,000kms with no more problems. I actually spun it and put it in a ditch, which stuffed a wheel bearing and cracked the plastic bumpers, but no other work was required to get the car running again. Even the alloy wheels did not break although a mechanic told me they usually do if the impact is severe enough to damage the wheel bearings. A solid car & running better than ever.

My partner owns a Mazda Astina 97, damn I love the car more than her.

I can't make any bad comments on this car, I've never come across a car so reliable.

It's more reliable than my 850 BMW or any other crappy car. very affordable price..

Mazda Astina Hatch is a hot car, the interior is glam set out perfect and looks expensive.

It's such a cute hatch, should I say THE SEXIEST HATCH EVER or also known as a coupe. Such a stunning sporty car.
