Fuel pump, alternator, endless tires, CV joints, A/C pump, leak in windshield, multiple belts for the engine, exhaust system, brakes, timing belt just to name a few!
My god, never EVER buy a 1986.5 Nissan Truck, not only do they fall apart and look ugly, they aren't reliable at all. Rust builds up like crazy no matter what you do, and settling for a cheap white paint job makes my truck look like white out... and since I'm such a fool, I invested money into getting a bra, tunnel cover, fog lights, light covers, ground effects just to make it look good, I didn't fool anyone... it still looks and runs like junk!
Well you must have gotten a lemon if there are any. My beautiful Nissan Hard-body is a 1986 1/2 and it will outrun full size Chevy trucks with the 350 vortech! That is in the 1/4 mile run and mine is factory with 256,000 miles on it.
I have a 1986.5 nissan hard body which just clicked over 286,000 miles. It is still running great with the original engine, transmission, and even the original clutch. Maybe you should try waxing it once in a while because my paint is just fine. Oh yeah, that's original too.
Runs like greased owl do do.
I got my 86.5 new off the lot with 2 miles on it. At 252,000 miles, I couldn't ask for a better truck. Although I've replaced the automatic tranny twice (1st time because of a boyfriend who abused it, 2nd time because the mechanic the first time was a phoney), the only repairs I've had done are brake calipers, A/C switch, headlight switch, and a couple of batteries. I bought a new car in '96, anticipating that the truck was due to die. Now the car's showing its age, but the truck's still going strong.
Kinda funny... this is like the only bad review on here for the hardbodys... makes me miss my 89...
I work for a nissan dealer in St Louis Mo, and I sell Nissan parts. My nissan pick up is an 88 and has 206,589 on it and is the best truck I've had. It out lasted my wifes 1986 Mazda b2000 with 189,256 when we junked it, so I think you just might has gotten the bad one out of thousands sold.
Good Luck
Lou.
We have a 1986.5 Nissan Long Bed 3.0 V6 with a 5 speed and it runs like you would not believe. It may rust real bad and the speedo went out at 42k, and it costs too much to fix (we have no idea how many actual miles it has). But we drive it a lot and it never fails to start. It is also pretty quick and rides pretty nice for a pick up.
I also want to get some specs on it like HP, but I can't find any, so if any one has them can you e-mail it to me at Mstang1985@yahoo.com
I have a 1986.5 Nissan V-6 King cab 2x4. Love this truck it's got 208,000 miles on it now. We have kept it in the family so it has been well taken care of. However there is 1 problem I am having with it. It does this slight hesitation when I am driving or sometime I notice at idle. No one not even Nissan dealer can't seem to fix the problem. I am getting ready to trade it in on a 2000 Nissan Frontier. I'm figuring it can't last forever, but I am extremely surprised of how long it has last. Especially the exterior still gleaming and inside like new. I am kind of attached to the truck with lots of great "first time experiences"!!! Its ashamed no one I have taken the truck to can fix the problem. Any last minute advice can email me at jalopez@aec.apgea.army.mil. 8/5/02.
I also have an '86.5 Nissan pickup. Mine has the z24 4cyl.,5 speed tranny, and 2wd (just so you know I guess). anyways, I can kinda see where this guy is coming from because I am also having my share of problems with it, but at the same time with it's age it is completely understandable. I received the truck for free (well, actually a trade for some car subwoofers) so I never expected it to be perfect, but for some reason I still love it. At this moment it is sitting in my garage in pieces as a project and my friends all tell me to just get rid of it, but I refuse. When it runs, it runs good. When it doesn't, it is reletively cheap and easy to fix. and it always looks good. All in all, while it may not be the best truck in the world, it certainly isn't the worst (it isn't a ford!), and I love it. So suck it up, after all how many other people can say they have an 86 AND A HALF of any type of vehicle (future collectability baby!). If you don't want it, I need parts, send 'em my way! Thanx.

I read a previous comment because I received my '86 Nissan for free too. This was mainly because of a bug that it has that no mechanic has been able to find. I'm ready to just junk it myself. Everything on it has pretty much been rebuilt and now the fuel pump is acting up. When I first got it, it would run beautifully for miles and suddenly just die somewhere (usually at half a tank) and refuse to start (no gas was getting to the starter) now, I've had it towed to my driveway and there it sits painfully turning over, but getting nowhere close to starting. I would be grateful for any ideas you might have or if you know someplace I could get a cheap fuel pump?
Thanks!

The reviewer calls himself a fool. All I know is this: My '87 Pathfinder has 212k on it without anything except two timing belts and front discs (and rotors 'cause I always wait too long). I abuse this truck. The thing whines, complains, is slow, clunky and handles like a pig, but it never fails to start and it always drives me where I want it to go. I think I'll reward it at 250 with an oil change.
I got a 86.5 se kingcab it has only 96,000 miles on it and the only things that have been replaced are sparkplugs and timing belt (of course oil and filters) The truck runs great, has a few rust spots due to some salty florida air and after about 3 days straight of rain it runs a little funny at first, but doesn't cause any problems. a/c works great too!
There is so much to say I don't know how or where to start!
I know there's just not enough room here to write all the good things I have to say, but let me tell you this...465,000 miles and the original motor is just now starting to brake-in. 3" lift and fully loaded my Nissan 1986 1/2 Hard-Body has been one of my best investments.
I think what makes one a fool is taking a He-Man Hard-Body and trying to turn it into a little girls truck by adding the "bra" and all the other effects.
Geeee...How would you run?
My 1986.5 Nissan pickup was the BEST most reliable vehicle I ever owned. It now has just under 300,000 miles on it, uses no oil, only been in the shop once or twice for minor problems. Oh, and there is no rust on it.
I bought an 89 Nissan hardbody with the 2.4 liter four cylinder and the 5-speed tranny for three hundred dollars. I expected poo, but I have a truck that will run like a scalded dog, tops out at 123, and this is with 247,488 original miles on it. The only thing I have done to it is new brake pads, new tires (low profile), and I replaced the factory clarion sound stereo (that still works) with a Pioneer Super Tuner. It handles better than most Camaroes, and this is coming from a domestic car lover.
