1980 Chevrolet Malibu Classic sport coupe from North America - Comments

"Still love it after all these years!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Not much. Had valve seals replaced, other than that, normal maintenance. Interior plastic has faded, & dash has cracked. Nothing major though.

General comments?

Still has the original drivetrain from 23 years ago. Runs like a top. Pick up & fuel mileage are great. Looks great too. Will be a long time before I get rid of this one. Love the styling, also. Other than getting rid of that awful stand up header ornament, & filling the hole with fiberglass, & re-shooting the spot with the factory blue body color, nothing else really had to be done to the body of the car. This car is a true GM gem, & a testament to the engineering that went into it.

Old Malibu's are safe, little old reliable machines. The newer ones are not as reliable as the old ones so I would recommend that you stay away from the newer ones. Instead why don't you spend you hard earned money on an Impala, Cavalier or a Honda.

Thank you for your good advice. However, I have no plans on parting with my 80 Malibu for anything new anytime soon.

My 1980 Malibu Classic with the 229 V6 continues to serve well after 23 years and 270,000 kilometers, even the air conditioning still works. No major repairs ever to the engine or transmission; the usual GM headliner drooping began about 5 years ago and I just rectified it with a kit, with good results. Only annoyance ever was resonating exhaust which coincided with replacement of catalytic. Still haven't found a fix for this, and the noise annoys, but it's not the Chevy's fault. Great bumpers, my Maxima is already scuffed, marked, and dented, but the Malibu has never seen a body shop, those 5 mph bumpers were great, I wish they still had them and I bet insurance would cost less. Mine Malibu has original paint too, thanks to regular waxing and the interior is rugged, that cloth is very comfy, but wears like iron. I've taken care of it, granted, but it's taken care of me.

I have a 1980 Malibu Classic as my first car with the 267 v8. It was my grandmothers and wasn't driven since 97' but since then it has run great after the carburetor was put back on. My father and I only had to replace the dryer for the air conditioning and the catalytic converter and with 95'000 miles it looks and runs great.

I am 17 and have a 1980 malibu classic with a 229 v6 the car looks and runs great with hte original paint, I would like to put a 327 in it, but I am not sure on how to go about it, my buddy had a 79 wagon with a 305 so I can use his motor mounts and drive tran, but I and not sure if that tranmission would work on my mounts and if I would have to us his axel and drive shaft, so if you have any information for me it would be apprciated.

I've had my 1980 Malibu Classic post Coupe for 3 yrs now. It was an original one owner with 32,500 miles on it. The body is very good, interior is excellent, trunk is superb, and the undercarriage is wonderful (esp being from the Chicago area).

Camel over bronze exterior with a camel vinyl interior and no vinyl roof. The metric trans is slipping a bit from lack of use. The V-6 runs fantastic. I did put 15x7 older Camaro rally wheels and wider tires on it. It made the ride even better. Last of a breed and getting harder to find. Great car and still under the radar for cost.

Hi we just acquired an 1981 chev malibu wagon and had a 1980 4 door in the past. The old one was a gem, but was from Quebec so it rusted out. This one we picked up in Nevada for 1000.00 and drove it home to Calgary, Alberta without more than a few things before we left and 2 small issues on the way back we fixed in the parking lot and they were mainly because she is modified and not stock. They are awesome cars and so great to look at - don't part with her, keep her up fix her if she needs it they sell for up to 15,000 in great condition.

Sweet cruzin.
