"Good looking, great handling, high-speed missile, with very high running costs!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

123,000 - Camshaft Sensor (expensive!)

- all the bushings in the front end stuffed, replaced with polyurethane, handles heaps better now.

108,000 - sunroof mechanism worn out. Had to replace whole sunroof! very expensive!!!

Timing belts and tensioners.

Dealer gave car back to me with a huge 0il leak! Had to take it back 6 times for them to finally get it right!!!

A certain Holden Dealership in St Leonards Sydney!!!

100,000 - exhuaust nneded replacing. Dealer quoted a crazy amount for replacement system. Replaced with full stainless sports exhaust. better performance, and much better sound!

95,000 - full clutch rebuild

Brakes + rotors

Shocks worn out. Original parts too expensive. Replaced with Monroe Sensatrack. Great shocks!!

80,000 - water pump, idler bearing, serpentine belt + pretty much every other belt and hose in the engine (except timing belt) + heaps of other little things.

58,000 - timing belts, brakes etc.

There's many more things I can list here, but can't remember them all at the moment.

If you'd like to know more, please email me at opel24v@hotmail.com.

General comments?

I love this car, otherwise I would have sold it in the first year of ownership.

All Australian Calibra owners that I've spoken to have been very unimpressed by the expense to keep their cars on the road.

Parts are 2-3 times more expensive than a similar Japanese car!

Parts are sometimes difficult to source.

Apparently I got the LAST camshaft sensor in Australia!

The V6 series has an electrical problem which probably isn't a problem in the northern hemisphere. When the engine bay gets to hot (middle of summer in Sydney) the engine starts shutting down!! this is a big worry in traffic jams!! nothing I can do to fix it!

03 I Agree with you.

I my self have a 96 n reg calibra and love it.

It now looks the biz.

But I have one problem and maybe you can help me or anyone else.

My temperature gauge don't seem to be working at all, and also the digital display on the middle of dash is not as well.

The clock is working OK, so the electric's to that point are fine, But the temp only says ----c?

Why is this and how can I check where the problem is.

Is it maybe that the wire on the engine head is falling off or faulty!!!Pls. help me

Hey there.

I'm from Belgium and have an Opel Calibra 16V Ecotec from 1997, one of the last 100 Cali's to ever have been built. I'm a real Calibra fan myself and like you would've sold the car long ago due to the costs if I didn't love it as much as I do.

To keep it short, here's a list of things that have gone wrong with it in less than 1 year;

- air intake sensors; replaced 3 times

- camshaft sensor replaced 2 times

- crankshaft sensor replaced

- crack in header (exhaust manifold) ; replaced with Lexmaul model

- exhaust rusting away

- radiator fan doesn't spin anymore, luckily temperature stays out of the red zone as the airco fan does turn on when the engine temperature nears the red zone.

- alternator replaced

- airco pump replaced

- servo pump replaced

- V-belt tension rolls replaced

- timing belt tension rolls replaced

- clutch replaced (couldn't shift gears in the middle of a big town, there I stood causing immense traffic jams on a saturday afternoon)

All together, I've put in nearly 5000 euros (I reckon that's about 7000 US Dollars) just to keep this car on the road and the costs just keep rising.

As official car dealers charged astronomical prices for parts and labour, I luckily found an non-official 'Opel-only' garage that can repair the car for a reasonable price. These guys can obtain 2nd hand parts (tested and found OK) for half the official price of even less.)

I know other people who drove calibra's for years without the least bit of trouble, so I guess when buying a calibra you're either very lucky of better be rich.

Most probably I'm gonna sell my car next year and buy an Astra OPC, hopefully they're more dependable than my Calibra...
